PANEL DISCUSSION DESCRIPTION

We have assembled an expert and multidisciplinary panel to discuss the current and clinically applicable understanding of the equine gastrointestinal microbiome and dysbiosis. There will be a focus on what defines a healthy microbiome, factors that disrupt it, and its potential clinical relevance. Key topics include the clinical use of faecal microbiomics, faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), and practical use of prebiotics, probiotics, and dietary strategies to modify, influence, or support intestinal microbiota populations. The panel will discuss clinical scenarios where the microbiome should be considered, address methods for assessing microbiome status, practical approaches to maintain or restore balance, and the potential impact on equine patients.

Carolyn Arnold is a Professor of Equine Surgery. She grew up in Southeastern Michigan and attended the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University from 1994-1998. After an internship at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in central Kentucky, she completed a Large Animal Surgical Residency at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center in 2003. She joined the faculty at the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Texas A&M University as a large animal surgeon from 2006-2022. In 2020, she completed a PhD at Texas A&M studying the affects of antimicrobials on the equine hind gut microbiome.

After graduating as a DVM in Brazil, Dr. Costa moved to Guelph, Ontario, to complete his Large Animal Internal Medicine residency and a PhD. There, he pioneered using DNA sequencing to study the equine intestinal microbiota. In 2014, he worked as a postdoc sponsored by the Brazilian government to investigate the consequences of growth promoter antibiotics on the intestinal microbiome of food animals.

He is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Montreal in Canada, working on manipulating microbiota to treat diseases and improve animal performance. He is especially interested in fecal microbiota transplantation and commensal bacteria with a high potential for colonizing the distal tract.

Since starting his career as a professor in 2017, Dr. Costa has supervised 17 graduate students. He has published over 70 scientific articles with 3230 citations and an h-index = 26. He is an Associate Editor of the Canadian Journal of Veterinary Research and a Board member of other journals, such as Anaerobe and Pets.

She is the author or co-author of over 500 scientific papers, abstracts, and book chapters with recent emphasis on obesity, laminitis, and senior horse nutrition. She was the co-editor for the 2021 Veterinary Clinics of North America Equine Practice on Equine Nutrition and co-authored two chapters including one on ‘What would be good for all veterinarians to know about Equine nutrition'.
