CONTENT DESCRIPTION

Endometritis remains a major cause of subfertility in mares, particularly as they age, with diagnosis and treatment often complicated by the presence of biofilms and the varying forms of the disease. This panel brings together leading experts to explore novel approaches, including potential plasma biomarkers, antimicrobial peptide expression, and inflammatory markers, alongside the latest insights into biofilm formation and its role in treatment resistance. Join this interactive session to stay at the leading edge of understanding of endometritis pathophysiology and learn how advances in diagnostics and therapeutics are helping to overcome barriers to effective management.

Dr. Canisso grew up in Brazil working with livestock and horses on the family farm. His family migrated from Italy and Spain to Brazil early in the 19th century, so he has had a heavy influence of those cultures in his upbringing.

After graduating from veterinary school and being in private practice in Brazil, he completed a master’s degree in animal reproductive biotechnology, which earned my reputation as a donkey reproduction specialist. He then moved to the United Kingdom for a fellowship in equine reproduction.

Thereafter, he completed a residency in theriogenology at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. My residency allowed him to become board certified by the American College of Theriogenologists and the European College of Animal Reproduction. Then, he moved to the world’s “Horse Capital” to earn a PhD in equine reproduction at the University of Kentucky, Lexington.

Dr. Canisso has been with the University of Illinois since 2014. He has a special interest in mentoring veterinary students, graduate students, and house officers.  In addition to working full tme at the University of Illinois Dr. Canisso is also running his own business the ACN Ranch LLC Stallion Station.

In 2025, Dr. Canisso was awarded the Theriogenologist of the Year by The American College of Theriogenologists.

Dr. Canisso travels around the world to speak and to consult on high-end mares and stallions suffering from reproductive problems. Throughout the year, he is a full-time clinician, but also performs classroom and clinical teaching in equine theriogenology. He has three areas of research interest: equine subfertility, perinatology, and reproductive biotechniques.

Dr. Ryan Ferris grew up in Soap Lake, Washington. He graduated from Washington State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2007. He completed an internship at Equine Medical Center of Ocala, Ocala FL after graduation. This was followed by a residency in Equine Reproduction at Colorado State University. After completing the residency Ryan joined the faculty at Colorado State University before moving with his family to start Summit Equine in 2017.

Dr. Maria Schnobrich grew up in Boston, MA, where visits to her grandparents’ farm and riding lessons sparked her interest in horses and large animals at a young age. Her desire to become an equine veterinarian was cemented while volunteering at Tufts Large Animal Hospital during college summers.

Dr. Schnobrich was a first-team all-American rower U23 US National Team member. She attended Brown University and the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. Her internship was at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital under Dr. Thomas Riddle. She then completed a second year as a resident veterinarian at Shadwell farm with Dr. Riddle.

Dr. Schnobrich completed her residency in large animal theriogenology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 2012. She was awarded the William B. Boucher Award for Outstanding Teaching at the New Bolton Center in 2012 and the 2012 Charles W. Raker Award. Dr. Schnobrich is a diplomate of the American College of Theriogenology.

Since 2012, Dr. Schnobrich has worked as a theriogenologist at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital with a primary focus on the problem of mares and stallions. She practices both ambulatory reproduction and advanced reproductive techniques. She has been involved in several research projects collaborating with colleagues locally and nationally. Her interests include diagnostic methods for the problem mare, enhancing reproductive success in the mare and stallion and evaluating field data to assess practices that enhance reproductive efficiency. Dr. Schnobrich is an active member in the AAEP and ACT and enjoys encouraging the next generation of equine veterinarians.

Dr. Schnobrich is married with three children, Macpherson, Patrick and Peter, and lives on a farm in Lexington, KY. Her hobbies include spending time with family and friends, accumulating random animals, gardening and painting.
