CONTENT DESCRIPTION

The principles of treating a symptomatic cardiac patient is rather straightforward. Once signs of congestion appear, clinical signs can be successfully controlled with cardiac medications that provide clinical improvement, sometimes for many months or even years. Nevertheless, cardiac diseases are inevitably progressive and patients will eventually die or will be euthanised due to signs of refractory congestive heart failure and deterioration of quality of life.

The principle of treating an asymptomatic patient is somewhat different since any intervention is not aimed at controlling clinical signs but at prolonging life expectancy, improving the quality of life and, in some rare cases, correcting the underlying condition. The international panel consisting of world-renowned cardiologists/internists and a criticalist  focus on this important aspect of modern small animal cardiology with a particular multidisciplinary emphasis on diagnostic and therapeutic interventions in asymptomatic patients, using an evidence-based approach aimed at experienced general practitioners

Dr. Shih is double-boarded in Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia and in Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. He graduated from the University of Sao Paolo in Brazil with his doctorate degree in Veterinary Medicine in 1999. He completed his residency in Veterinary Anesthesia at the University of Florida. He then completed a fellowship in Veterinary Emergency Medicine and Critical Care.

Dr. Shih is boarded in both the American College of Veterinary Emergency Critical Care and also in the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia. Following his residency and fellowship, he spent 12 years on faculty as an associate professor in the Department of Anesthesia at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. He joined the staff at Capital Veterinary Specialists, Jacksonville in 2016 and is excited to be serving the First Coast. Dr. Shih is married and has two children. He enjoys fishing with his sons in his free time.

Clarke Atkins, DVM, is Professor of Medicine and Cardiology at North Carolina State University. A 1972 graduate of the University of California, Davis, Dr. Atkins completed his internship at the Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston. He became board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in internal medicine in 1978 and in cardiology in 1992.

Dr. Atkins is known for his research and teaching in small animal cardiology, having authored more than 150 publications. He is also the author of a multimedia interactive computer program in canine cardiology and numerous textbook chapters. In addition, he has spoken extensively in the United States, as well as in many countries around the world.

After graduating from the University of Zaragoza, Domingo completed an internship at the Animal Medical Center (Manchester) and worked at two large hospitals in the UK where he obtained RCVS Certificates in Small Animal Medicine and Veterinary Cardiology. He is also completing a part-time PhD, studying the cardiovascular and arrhythmogenic effects of Leishmania Infantum. Domingo has published many scientific articles, has written book chapters in Cardiology and Respiratory Medicine, and has received research grants. He has also given many lectures at national and international conferences. Domingo's main areas of interest include arrhythmias, interventionism, and the interaction between cardiac and respiratory conditions.
