Online Lecture –  Feed Supplements – Understanding what you recommend… & Case Discussions

Part of the Online Lecture Series on Clinical Equine Nutrition - Influencing Diseases & Conditions via Nutritional Strategies

The aim of this interactive Module will be to fully understand the evidence for supplementation in a variety of clinical conditions affecting the performance horse including, but limited to, gastric and intestinal diseases, muscle conditions and lameness.  The session will emphasise the need to understand that the active ingredients of supplements are NOT medicines and to therefore critically interpret studies, especially also bearing in mind the geographical differences of available products.  Interactive clinical case-discussions will round off this important topic.

Gayle graduated from the University of Cambridge and completed a rotating internship and then large animal internal medicine and critical care residency at the Royal Veterinary College in London. She then completed a PhD investigating aortic valve prolapse at the University of Nottingham. After 20 years in academia, she left in February 22 to become Director of veterinary Professional Development for IVC Evidensia. She still undertakes clinical work at Pool House Equine Hospital. She is an American Specialist in Large Animal Internal Medicine, American Specialist in Large Animal Emergency and Critical Care, EBVS Specialist in Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation and is Associate Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging. Since graduating from Nottingham University with an Animal Science Degree, and University College Dublin Vet School, with a Postgraduate Diploma in Equine Science , Ruth has worked in commercial nutrition roles varying from consulting, equine feed manufacture, and currently works for Premier Nutrition, a United Kingdom-based premix provider. As such Ruth has wide experience of diet and feed formulation, and also the factors that impact the quality of the feedstuffs that horses eat. Her interest in performance horse nutrition focuses on helping ensure that performance horse diets supply the nutrients and ingredients required, whilst minimising the risk of undesirable contaminants. Ruth has worked with the British Equestrian Team for several years as part of the team providing advice on feeding and nutrition to the squads.
