PANEL DISCUSSION DESCRIPTION

Malocclusions or misalignments of the teeth may simply result in a crooked grin. However, they also have the potential to significantly affect the daily lives of our patients. They can have an impact on their overall health and comfort. Amongst other things they can play a role in their ability to eat, increase their risk for periodontal disease and result in excessive wear on other teeth.

Discomfort can result in irritability and other behavioural changes and, in general, reduce their potential quality of life. The options for treatments can range from simple minimally invasive procedures to more advanced Facio-maxillary surgeries. The challenge can sometimes be in recognising if and when the more advanced or invasive procedures should be considered, and which of the malocclusions that can be picked up during the first few puppy vaccinations have the capacity to cause harm if left untreated.

In this discussion, our multidisciplinary panel of international experts will discuss how to recognise these conditions in time, their tips and tricks for correcting them and their insights into managing some of the more challenging cases. Questions from the audience are welcomed and encouraged.

After studying dentistry at ACTA in Amsterdam (graduated 1998), Dr. Booij-Vrieling studied veterinary medicine in Utrecht (graduated 2004). She subsequently obtained her PhD (2010) for research into tooth resorption in cats. In 2018, she obtained the title "specialist in veterinary dentistry" and is a "Diplomate of the European Veterinary Dental College", the first in the Netherlands.

Within the university clinic Dr. Booij-Vrieling is involved in all dental treatments, mainly dogs and cats, but she also sees ferrets regularly. Dr. Booij-Vrieling also works as a dentist, which means she is aware of the latest human insights and can apply them to the treatments of veterinary patients.

More Info

Dr. Charles Felz grew up in Colorado, and from a very early age he knew he wanted to be a veterinarian. He started working as a kennel assistant at Fremont Veterinary Hospital in Canon City Colorado at 14 and continued working there through high school. The owner, Dr. Ron Smith, was a major influence for Dr. Felz. He credits Dr. Smith with teaching him to be a caring and compassionate Veterinarian who serves both his clients and his patients. After high school Dr. Felz completed his undergraduate studies at Colorado State University before accepting admission to Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine where he spent 4 rigorous years training to be a doctor and ultimately earning his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2008. After graduation Dr. Felz practiced small animal medicine back home in Colorado.

In 2009 Dr. Felz was chosen for a prestigious academic internship at Iowa State University-College of Veterinary Medicine. During the 12-month internship Dr. Felz worked at the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center at Iowa State University where he gained specialized skills in small animal internal medicine, surgery, and emergency medicine. After completing the internship Dr. Felz started a residency in Veterinary Anesthesia and Pain Management again at Iowa State University. During his residency training Dr. Felz gained advanced training in anesthesia and pain management, solidifying his belief that all patients undergoing an anesthetic procedure should be administered the safest possible medications and monitored while anesthetized with the most state of the art equipment possible.

In 2011 Dr. Felz founded Somerset Veterinary Hospital in Ames, Iowa. The practice would go on to be very successful and win several awards including Best Veterinarian in Story County for 6 straight years, every year in which Dr. Felz owned the practice. Despite owning a successful practice, Dr. Felz wanted more then anything to raise his children in the mountains, so in 2017 he sold his practice and moved his family back west settling in Missoula, Montana and serving the community of Missoula as a Veterinarian at Missoula Veterinary Clinic. In 2023 Dr. Felz completed a rigorous dentistry and oral surgery residency training program with Dr. Tony Woodward at Montana Pet Dentistry and Oral Surgery in Bozeman, and now dedicates his time to providing excellent patient care in Missoula.

When not caring for patients, Dr. Felz loves to spend time with his family, hike, travel, and is an avid wildlife photographer.
