Sheila Gail Spacek is a first-year resident within the Section of Theriogenology in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences (VLCS) at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (CVMBS).  Hailing from Dime Box, Texas, she is a proud member of the Texas A&M Class of 2009—having completed her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology.

Horses were always a passion of Dr. Spacek’s and she pursued it as an intern working at a local Texas breeding farm. From this experience, her interest in reproduction began. The completion of her internship lead her to a position at the Texas A&M Equine Embryo Lab as a technician for Dr. Katrin Hinrichs.

As her interest in equine reproduction grew, she was fortunate to be offered a position in the lab of Dr. Elaine Carnevale at Colorado State University (CSU) to pursue a Masters of Science in Biomedical Sciences. Her work there focused on equine follicular fluid collected from young and old mares at different time points and its effects on in-vitro oocyte maturation and blastocyst production post intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in an equine system as well as a bovine IVF system.

Upon completion of her master’s, she stayed at CSU to complete her DVM degree. She then traveled to Lexington, Kentucky, and completed an ambulatory internship at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital. Areas of interest for Dr. Spacek are focused around mare reproductive breeding management, assisted reproductive technologies, and broodmare gestational management.

Outside of veterinary medicine, Dr. Spacek enjoys time with her dog, Boots Alan, hosting her family and friends, wade fishing, hiking, and—of course—working with horses.
