Dr. Hoyt Cheramie received his Bachelor of Science in Dairy Production and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees from Louisiana State University in 1990 and 1993 respectively. He practiced in central Kentucky for a year then completed a large animal internship at the University of Tennessee in 1995 and a combined Large Animal Surgery Residency and Master’s program at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 1998. Dr. Cheramie became board certified in large animal surgery in 2000. He practiced performance horse medicine and surgery in the New Orleans, Atlanta and Chicago areas, working on horses in a variety of disciplines including thoroughbred race horses, hunter/jumper, dressage, eventing, barrel racing, gaited horses, and various western performance events between 1999 and 2007. He joined Merial in 2007 Merial as a member of the Equine Veterinary Professional Services team providing technical and professional support to the US Equine Sales and Marketing Business Units and Global Equine Commercial Development Unit and is now with Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health since 2017 through its acquisition of Merial. His professional and research interests include surgical and medical colic management, EGUS, guttural pouch disease, sustainable parasite control, podiatry and performance limiting problems in horses. Dr. Cheramie has performed over 3000 gastroscopic exams and is a world-renowned expert on Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome. He has been an invited speaker at state, regional and national veterinary and equine industry conferences.
