CONTENT DESCRIPTION
Flat racehorses are among the most finely tuned equine athletes, subject to intense training and competition demands that push their bodies to the limit. This second discussion in the Discipline-Specific Performance Challenges series brings together leading veterinarians from around the world to explore the performance challenges they encounter specific to the flat racehorse. The panel will examine performance-limiting factors and challenges commonly encountered in flat racing and debate the similarities and differences in their approaches to prevention and management. From young horses entering training to seasoned campaigners, join the discussion on optimising soundness, enhancing performance, and setting realistic expectations for flat racehorses at every stage of their careers.
Dr. Ryan Carpenter graduated from UC Davis, school of veterinary medicine in 2005 and went on to complete a surgical residency and combined master’s program at Colorado State University where he conducted orthopedic research projects focusing on gene therapy and fracture healing under the direction of the Equine Orthopedic Research Center at CSU. Ryan spends his mornings as an active racetrack practitioner and his afternoons in the hospital specializing in orthopedic and upper airway surgery. When not at the track, Ryan enjoys spending time with his wife, Jill, and daughters Brooklyn (7 y/o) and Taylor (4.5 y/o), pretty much doing whatever the little ones want to do because that changes most days!!!

She later received her PhD studying Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis at the University of Kentucky. During her graduate studies at UK, she moonlighted working for the Kentucky Racing Commission as a State Veterinarian and developed a passion for the sport of horse racing. When not in South Florida attending to racehorses, Dr. Hay travels to many thoroughbred sales consulting with clients on potential purchases. Dr. Hay is a former President of the American Association of Equine Practitioners and has been active in many committees during his membership in the AAEP. He also serves on the Racing Medication Testing Consortium’s Scientific Advisory Committee and is a former member of the Grayson Jockey Club Scientific Advisory Committee.
