CONTENT DESCRIPTION

Treating large equine skin wounds remains a significant challenge in veterinary practice, especially when primary closure is not possible and healing must occur by second intention. With a wide array of potential management strategies—and a growing number of novel treatments—the decision-making process can be complex and case-dependent.

In this discussion, the expert panel will share their approaches and case experiences in managing large open wounds and burns. The session will explore the current evidence behind treatment protocols and foster debate around emerging therapies and future directions in equine wound management. The panel will be sharing interesting cases, and the many practical tips and tricks they have picked up along the way!

Discussion topics will include a range of treatment options such as LASER therapy, infrared and red monochromatic light, medical-grade honey, strategies for managing biofilms, cell therapy, platelet-rich plasma, and biological dressings.

Dylan studied veterinary science at Bristol University, graduating in 1998. Following an internship in equine surgery at the Royal Veterinary College in London, he moved to Manchester where he investigated the role of growth factors in abdominal adhesion formation. After completing his PhD in 2003, he undertook a three-year surgical residency at Liverpool University, before moving to Sweden with his wife and three children. He is currently head of equine surgery at the veterinary school in Uppsala. He is a recognised European specialist in equine surgery, having obtained the Diploma in 2008 (Dipl. ECVS). He has lectured internationally on equine wound management.
