ONLINE LECTURE SERIES DESCRIPTION

Skin related problems and diseases are common in any type of horse and pony and equine practitioners are therefore regularly exposed to such cases on routine visits or during pre-purchase examinations. Despite the undeniable importance of dermatology to the equine clinician, most veterinarians have received only limited training in this area whilst in vet school or as a young assistant.  This practically-oriented webinar series is intended to provide the equine or mixed practitioner with an overview of the most common skin conditions affecting the horse and pony and how to approach them systematically and practically

The following topics will be covered by two specialists in the field of dermatology in highly illustrated lectures and case presentations and will focus on how they approach skin conditions in a first opinion field setting:

  • General approach to the skin case
  • Skin diseases typified by hair loss
  • Skin diseases associated with severe itching
  • Skin disease associated with pain
  • Skin diseases featuring scaling & crusting
  • Pastern dermatitis
  • Non-neoplastic lumps and bumps
  • Neoplastic skin diseases
  • Skin disease as part of a wider systemic disease
  • Skin disease associated with pigmentary changes
  • Use of clinical pathology in investigation of skin disease
  • Skin therapeutics
  • Tricky cases and how to crack them

Andy graduated from Bristol in 1988 and after two years in mixed practice started in ambulatory equine practice in the Midlands. He gained the RCVS CertEP in 1993 before moving to Liphook Equine Hospital in 1994, becoming a partner in 2001. This was followed by the RCVS diploma in equine internal medicine in 2003 and European diploma in equine internal medicine in 2004. Andy has continued to perform a little first opinion ambulatory work although he now mainly works in the new hospital at Liphook with medical in-patients and the diagnostic laboratory. He has recently been appointed as visiting professor at the University of Surrey, Guildford and is involved in the development of a new veterinary school there. Andy’s main professional interests are in endocrine disease, liver disease, dermatology, infectious diseases and most other aspects of internal medicine.

Derek qualified from Edinburgh University in 1970 and after a period in research, spent 12 years in private practice. During this time he developed a keen interest in equine medicine and in 1985 he joined the academic world. Derek moved to Liverpool in 1989 and has since become Professor in Equine Internal Medicine. He has published widely in the scientific and lay press and is the author of 10 recognised text books. Derek has received international awards for his welfare work, his science and in 2005 he was honoured with an OBE by the Queen for his services to the horse. He is involved with national and international equine welfare and other charities. Derek's main professional interests are in oncology, dermatology, ophthalmology and wound management.
