ONLINE LECTURE SERIES DESCRIPTION

This webinar series has been developed for equine veterinarians who have experience with lameness investigations and provides a critical overview of possible causes of hindlimb lameness, diagnostic anaesthetic strategies and how to interpret nerve and joint block results, via a regio-anatomic approach. Discussions on the upper hindlimb as a cause of lameness (hip joint, pelvic and sacroiliac problems), objective lameness evaluation and on systemic and intra-articular joint therapies will round the course off. All speakers are internationally renowned in the field of lameness diagnostics and spend a significant proportion of their clinical work investigating complex lameness cases.

Chris graduated from the University of Sydney and stayed on completing an internship at Camden. He joined the Randwick Equine Centre in 1997 and in mid 2000 left to further his training in surgery undertaking a residency at The Ohio State University in the USA. Chris obtained specialist status in the USA returning to Randwick Equine Centre in 2003, becoming a partner in 2008. 

Chris has multiple first author publications and a text book chapter. Chris services Sydney racetracks and is predominately based in the hospital at Randwick. He also travels as a consultant to NSW Southern Highlands and South Coast.

Christina did her degree in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. Her final year before graduation was spent traveling between the different continents seeing equine practice as well as being an Erasmus exchange student at Hannover University in Germany. Following graduation, she took the opportunity to move to the UK and work as Product Development Manager for Eickemeyer Veterinary Equipment Ltd specialising in the Equinosis Q with Lameness Locator software - a system she had become very familiar with during her travels. Objective lameness evaluation was still very new to the continent and especially the UK where only a few systems were being used in equine practice. As Equinosis Certified Practitioner, Christina spent most of her time demonstrating the Equinosis Q to equine practices, assisting the veterinary surgeons with their lameness examinations. In early 2018 she joined Blaircourt Equine Veterinary Clinic and continued to use the Equinosis Q in cases of lameness or poor performance. Despite being in clinical practice, she was still actively involved in courses and events worldwide focusing on objective lameness evaluation and the Equinosis Q. Christina recently completed her Certification in Equine Rehabilitation (CERP) and since December 2019 has worked as an independent consultant for Eickemeyer in Europe as a specialist in objective lameness evaluation. 

Roger Smith is Professor of Equine Orthopaedics at the Royal Veterinary College, London, UK. He qualified as a veterinary surgeon from Cambridge University (UK) in 1987, having obtained a First for his undergraduate degree and a Cambridge Blue at swimming. After 2 years in practice, he returned to academia to undertake further clinical training as a Resident in Equine Studies at the Royal Veterinary College. Following his residency, he undertook a 3 year research project culminating in the award of a PhD for his studies on the extracellular matrix of equine tendon.

He remained at the Royal Veterinary College, first as a Lecturer in Equine Surgery, then as Senior Lecturer in Equine Surgery before his appointment as Professor in Equine Orthopaedics in December 2003.

He holds the Diploma of Equine Orthopaedics from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and is a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Specialist in Equine Surgery. He is a Diplomate of the European Colleges of Veterinary Surgeons and Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, and is also a Large Animal Associate of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging.

In 2016, he was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons for meritorious contribution to knowledge and was elected to president of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons in July 2017.

He divides his time between running a specialist orthopaedic referral service within the Royal Veterinary College, where he is involved in lameness diagnostics, imaging and orthopaedic surgery, and continuing to direct research into equine tendon disease. His principal research interests are understanding the pathogenesis of tendon disease, diagnostics for tendon and ligament disease, and stem cell therapy for tendons in both horses and humans.

He is married to a medical doctor and has two sons.
