Rose Peters (USA), Jean-Philippe Billet (France), Jared Jaffey (USA) & Tiziana Liuti (UK).

The Dinokeng Game Reserve is a malaria-free game reserve, 1 hours' drive from Johannesburg International Airport. There the ‘Big Five’ (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard & rhinoceros) roam wild and free in the 18,500-hectare game reserve.  Bass fishing and the obligatory swimming pool will provide you with the ideal environment to relax with your friends and accompanying partner/guest. The lectures and wetlabs will be held at Mongena Game Lodge.  Guest will be staying at one of the following stunning Lodges within the Dinokeng Game Reserve, a short scenic drive from Mongena Game Lodge:  Little MongenaChameleon Bush Lodge and Siyaya Game Lodge.

From Mon – Thu there will be a total of 4-5 hrs of sunrise- and sunset safaris per day and the lectures and practical sessions will be held between 10.15am – 3.30pm.  Every day attendees can choose from several streams of highly illustrated lectures (in English) or workshops/wetlabs on a wide range of current imaging, orthopaedic, medical, anaesthesia & surgical topics.  The evenings will be free for leisurely wining and dining, to meet up with old friends and to make new ones.

During the event open and frank discussions are encouraged and the speakers will share their personal experiences with attendees, be it successes or failures.  There will be plenty of opportunities to discuss diagnostic/therapeutic strategies and cases with the speakers during the lectures or the dedicated case discussions.

The following topics will be covered:

  • Soft Tissue & Emergency Surgery
  • Diagnostic Imaging (Ultrasound, X-ray & CT/MRI)
  • Liver & Respiratory Diseases, Endocrinology, GIT & LRT Endoscopy & AFAST/TFAST Ultrasound

The 28 hours of practical sessions will give attendees plenty of opportunity to put theory into practice on live dogs and specimens in small groups, all under the supervision of the specialists.

The final programme will be confirmed by 1st January 2024.

On Friday there won’t be any lectures or practical sessions, which will allow attendees and their partners/guests to relax at the pool, go for a bush walk or go on a daytrip to explore this beautiful region.

Dr. Jared Jaffey is a board-certified small animal internist and Assistant Professor at the Midwestern University College of Veterinary Medicine. He is from South Florida and attended the University of Florida for his undergraduate studies. He enjoyed Gainesville so much (Go Gators!) that he stayed in town to attend veterinary school, where he graduated in 2012. He then moved across the country to East Bay, California, where he completed a private practice rotating internship. He moved back to South Florida, completed two internal medicine specialty internships, and obtained a Master’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences from Florida Atlantic University. Dr. Jaffey then completed a three-year residency in small animal internal medicine at the University of Missouri in 2018. He has been a part of the Midwestern University team since 2018.

In a professional setting, Dr. Jaffey loves teaching veterinary students, performing research, and seeing patients. His research interests include the following areas hepatobiliary, endocrinology, respiratory tract, infectious diseases, immunologic effects of vitamin D, and several hereditary disorders such as cytochrome b5 reductase deficiency and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. He has > 50 journal article publications and authored book chapters in several reference textbooks including Ettinger’s Textbook of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Small Animal Gastroenterology, and Clinical Veterinary Advisor. He also lectures nationally and internationally on various topics related to small animal internal medicine.

Dr. Jaffey’s incredible partner in crime is Dr. Casandra Jacobs, who is also a small animal internist. They share three dogs (Zoey, Luna, and Roscoe) and two cats (Odie and Sylvie). Dr. Jaffey used to have a menagerie of houseplants but that has changed since his cats outlawed them. Dr. Jaffey enjoys staying active at the gym, watching and playing sports, and dominating fantasy football.

JP qualified in 1991 from the Veterinary School of Nantes, France. After few years in small animal practice in France, he went to perform a Small Animal Internship at Colorado State University, USA. Then, he worked in a small animal referral practice before entering a small animal surgery residency training program at the University of Bristol, United-Kingdom. He became a diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2004. Following his residency he went back to Nantes to work as a small animal soft tissue surgeon in a referral practice. With other specialists he set up in 2006 a small animal referral hospital (CHVA) in Nantes, France. He is still working in the same hospital as a small animal soft tissue surgeon with a special interest in gastrointestinal, thoracic and minimally invasive surgery. JP was very active in his specialist college (ECVS) over the last 10 years. He lectures extensively at national and international courses/conferences on small animal surgery has published several papers in peer-reviewed veterinary journals and text books.

Dr. Rose Peters graduated from the University of Illinois in 2005 and went on to complete a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery with VCA. Afterwards, she worked as an emergency clinician for canine, feline, and non-traditional species in a New Orleans multi-specialty practice where she ultimately became the head of the department. She also became certified in veterinary acupuncture through CSU to expand the Rehabilitation department services during that time. Neurology has been a long-time passion, and Dr. Peters finally left New Orleans to complete a Neurology internship at a multispecialty practice in Virginia, and then completed a residency with board certification in Neurology at the University of Florida. She also holds the ACVIM certification in Neurosurgery and has enjoyed a broad range of medical and surgical cases in her time working in multispecialty private practices in New Orleans and South Florida. She is happy to have returned to the University of Illinois to join old friends on the clinical neurology team as an assistant professor of veterinary clinical neurology. She is interested in finding the most effective ways to empower veterinary students, house officers, and graduated veterinarians with the skills required to serve today’s community needs. Rose’s research focus is on veterinary neurology medical education with additional special interests in neurologic problems in non-traditional species and integrative medicine for the neurologic patient. Rose is the recipient of the Heiligenstein Excellence in Teaching Award and is repeatedly ranked “excellent” by her students.

The entire event is very casual. For wetlabs, shorts and t-shirt are perfectly fine. We recommend closed toes shoes when choosing wetlabs with live horses.

For dinner, the dress code is also very casual.

During the early morning and evening safaris a warm jumper, cardigan or coat is useful to have as it can get quite cold on the open plan jeeps.

Have any unwanted textbooks?

"VetBooks for Africa“: a group of veterinary students from the vet school at Onderstepoort does a tour of some neighbouring countries, visiting vet schools and charities. The main purpose behind the trip (other than offering the students an opportunity to visit the countries and making connections) is to distribute veterinary textbooks to them. They collect books on an ongoing basis, and would be very happy to receive any unused text books. There is a short video of their last trip at  https://youtu.be/i9fqrtFlamU
