COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course focusses on introducing the concept of point-of-care ultrasound for trauma, triage, tracking, treatment & total systemic evaluation (the 5 T’s of POCUS) to the general small animal practitioner (even without any experience with ultrasound).  The specialists will show how point-of-care ultrasound differs from the complete ultrasonographic examination performed by diagnostic imaging specialists and how any small animal practitioner can acquire the necessary skills to use point-of-care ultrasound in everyday practice.  The theory is covered via 8 hours of online lectures  (available on-demand) and covers the following topics that have conveniently been split up into four 2-hour sessions:

  • The Essentials of Point-of-Care Ultrasound
  • Abdominal Point-of-Care Ultrasound Examinations
  • How to Examine the Lung & Pleural Spaces
  • Pneumothorax, Pleural Effusion & Lung Pathology
  • Cardiac Ultrasound Made Easy!
  • Vascular Ultrasound – Estimating Fluid Status, Fluid Responsiveness & Fluid Overload
  • Point-of-Care Ultrasound Case-Discussions & Self-Assessment

The on-location portion starts at 7:30am for Group 1 and at 1:40PM for Group 2.
Each group will be taken through, 4 hours of practical sessions which will give attendees plenty of opportunity to train the different point-of-care techniques on live animals and models and to get tips and tricks in small groups (2 – 4 attendees per ultrasound machine), under the supervision of the specialists.  Each attendee will rotate through the following practical stations:

  • Cardiac Point of Care Ultrasound
  • Abdominal Point of Care Ultrasound
  • Pulmonary (Pleural/Lung) Point of Care Ultrasound
  • Ultrasound-Guided Vascular Access Techniques on Specimens

The course fee includes, coffee/tea break, lunch and a certificate of attendance. To participate in the On-Location Practical Sessions, attendees are required to have first worked through the Lecture Series.  Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available due to the highly practical nature of this course.

Following graduation in 1995 from The University of Cambridge, Dan worked in mixed practice for five years, where he gained the RCVS Certificate in Veterinary Anaesthesia. In 2000, he moved to Petmedics, a large hospital-based emergency clinic in Manchester, where he remained for eight years.

In 2008 Dan embarked upon a residency at The Royal Veterinary College, obtaining his Diploma in Emergency & Critical Care in 2011. Following this, Dan spent a period in charge of the ICU at Bristol vet school before returning to Petmedics. Dan joined the Vets Now 24/7 Emergency and Specialty Hospital, Glasgow in January 2015 as part of our existing ECC team and has since been promoted to National ECC Lead.

Dan is interested in all aspects of critical care, but particularly in septic patients and poorly cats.

Kris Gommeren graduated in 2002 at Ghent University, where he performed an internship and a residency in internal medicine. He became a diplomate in internal medicine in 2009, and briefly worked in a private referral practice, before moving to Liège University, where he is in charge of the ECC-service. Kris is past-president of the European Society of Emergency and Critical Care (EVECCS). He obtained his PhD on the effects of systemic inflammation on the cardiovascular system. In 2017 he became Diplomate in Emergency and Critical Care. He also works on a consultancy basis for Evidensia, in order to develop facilities and train personnel. His main fields of interest are point of care ultrasound, the cardiovascular system, fluid therapy and the assessment of volume status.
