CONTENT DESCRIPTION

Many veterinarians include reproductive services in their practices but work primarily with the mare side of the fertility equation. However, the other half of the equation – the stallion - rarely receives the attention that it deserves. This discussion will focus on the latest from the stallion side of equine fertility management.

The international panel of world-renowned stallion experts will begin the discussion with male-factor topics with which every veterinarian involved in equine breeding management should be familiar with, current state-of-the-art methods for semen analysis of fresh, cooled and frozen semen samples, examination of normal and abnormal testicles, and important infectious diseases of stallions (incl. EVA, CEM & other bacterial pathogens).

The discussion will then progress to more advanced stallion topics for those who are keen to take their knowledge to the next level, such as developing the best approaches for dealing with subfertile stallions, libido modulation (both up and down), and common reproductive problems of stallions.

Discussions will center around case-based material selected to highlight important topics in stallion reproduction with plenty of opportunity for attendees to ask questions and panelists to share tips, tricks and pearls of wisdom.

Dr. Charles Love is a professor in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences (VLCS) and directs the Flow Cytometer Laboratory at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVMBS). He received his DVM from the University of Missouri, his PhD in Comparative Medical Sciences from the University of Pennsylvania, and is a diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists.

With numerous manuscripts, book chapters, and invited presentations to his credit, he is an internationally recognized authority on stallion reproduction. Dr. Love’s research focuses on the relationship of sperm laboratory measures to fertility, improving techniques for collection, analysis, and storage of semen, and development of record-analysis systems for critically studying the fertility of stallions.

James graduated from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, Edinburgh in 2001. After four years in mixed practice he travelled between the hemispheres working for a number of years in specialist stud practice in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. In 2010 he was awarded the RCVS certificate in Equine Stud Medicine and in 2011 became a lecturer at Liverpool University examining the stud medicine certificate since 2012.

James has published work on many topics relevant to clinical practitioners including material on breeding soundness evaluation, infectious disease, peri-partum problems, ovarian abnormalities, oestrus suppression, persistent endometrial cups, management of spring transition and twin pregnancy. James continues to perform and publish practice based research and collaborates widely. In 2013, he became director of Equine Reproductive Services (UK) Limited growing and developing a busy first opinion and referral equine practice in Yorkshire. James is recognised as an Advanced Practitioner in Equine Stud Medicine, he is a current BEVA council member and trustee of the International Equine Reproduction Trust.

James has made a sustained and significant contribution to veterinary professional development with formal and informal teaching and assessment of post graduates. James has organised and delivered many CPD courses and congresses in the UK and Europe and has delivered presentations on material ranging from basic to advanced topics around the World. In 2022, his efforts were recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons who awarded James with a Fellowship for meritorious contributions to clinical practice.

Malgorzata Pozor received her Med. Vet. (DVM) degree in 1985, from the University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wroclaw, Poland, and in 1992 a PhD degree from the University of Agriculture in Krakow, Poland. She worked as a junior faculty in the Department of Animal Reproduction at the University of Agriculture, Krakow, Poland, starting in 1985, and as an Assistant Professor, starting in 1993. In 1996, Dr. Pozor completed her residency in large animal reproduction at the New Bolton Center, University of Pennsylvania, USA, and became a Diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists. In 1997, she became a Veterinary Specialist in Animal Reproduction in Poland. In 1998, she served as a temporary faculty member in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University, USA. She joined the faculty at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Florida in 2002, initially as a lecturer, then as a Clinical Assistant Professor, and currently as a Clinical Associate Professor.

Dr. Pozor’s clinical and research interests include equine andrology, reproductive behaviour and endocrinology, as well as new modalities of imaging in diagnosing reproductive disorders in horses. More specifically, her research focused on medical modifications of testicular blood flow in stallions, and most currently, on intratesticular stem cell transplantation as a treatment for male infertility. Dr. Pozor published numerous articles on stallion reproduction, and presented her work on national and international conferences.

Dr. Regina Turner graduated from the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine in 1989. After a year in a private mixed animal practice, Dr. Turner returned to Penn’s New Bolton Center to complete a 2-year residency in Large Animal Reproduction. She then stayed on as a lecturer and became a Diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists in 1994.

Between 1995 and 1999, Dr. Turner completed a PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Medicine, focusing on the molecular biology of mammalian sperm motility. After completion of her PhD, she was hired as a faculty member in Penn’s Veterinary School at New Bolton Center where she currently serves as a Professor of Large Animal Reproduction and Chief of the Section of Reproduction and Behavior.

Although Dr. Turner sees a wide range of reproduction-related cases, her primary interest is stallion fertility. In this regard, her research interests have focused on the effects of aging on testicular function and the molecular and cellular regulation of sperm motility.
