CONTENT DESCRIPTION

Laminitis is an age-old problem. Despite great recent advances, even the most experienced clinicians, researchers and horse owners still struggle to get to grips with this brutal condition. This international, multi-disciplinary panel brings together experts in farriery/podiatry, equine internal medicine and surgery and laminitis research. The interactive discussion will focus on practical approaches to prevention of laminitis and the management of acute and chronic cases with plenty of opportunities for the audience to ask questions and share their thoughts. The discussion will integrate physical management of the foot with the medical management of the patient and will include but not be limited to:

  • Can we screen for laminitis, identify those at highest risk and prevent its development? Is regular testing or radiography helpful?
  • How should we manage the acute case? Should different types of laminitis be managed differently?
  • Chronic laminitis – what are plans B, C, D, and E if plan A fails? When should we stop treatment?

Dr. Parks received his Vet MB from the University of Cambridge in 1981. Dr. Parks is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and received his certificate in Veterinary Radiology from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1982. He currently serves as Professor of large animal surgery at the University of Georgia. Dr. Parks has made over 160 professional presentations and has peer reviewed and authored articles and book chapters. His clinical interests are large animal surgery lameness and diseases of the foot.

Andrew graduated from the University of Queensland School of Veterinary Science in Australia, His PhD studies focused on the effects of therapeutic hypothermia on the development of laminitis. After completing a large animal medicine residency at New Bolton Center, and seven years at the University of Queensland as a faculty member and clinician, Andrew again returned to New Bolton Center in 2017 to focus on laminitis research as the Dean W. Richardson Endowed Chair of Equine Disease Research. Andrew's research goal is to identify the key mechanisms that lead to different forms of laminitis in order to develop clinically applicable strategies for prevention.

Edd graduated from Cambridge University in 2005. He worked in small animal practice at the PDSA for 18 months before joining BEVC as an intern in January 2007. After completing his internship he stayed at Bell Equine as an ambulatory vet primarily covering the North West area of the practice for a further 2-3 years. In 2010 Edd undertook a 3 year specialist training program in Equine Internal Medicine in collaboration with the Royal Veterinary College and became a European Specialist in Equine Internal Medicine. Edd has strong interests in clinical research. He is currently undertaking a part time PhD in equine laminitis whilst continuing to work both in the hospital and as an ambulatory vet at Bell Equine.
