The recruitment crisis is undeniably upon us. The veterinary sector is hard hit worldwide with small animal, equine and rural practice impacted alike. The causes, well recognized today, are an insufficient production of vets, many leaving the profession early or not even starting their careers once graduated.

Why? Times have changed... The younger generation is markedly feminine and they do not have the same expectations of the profession or life as previous generations. The question is not about who is right or wrong but rather what can be done to embrace these changes and bridge the gap in order to move the profession forward…

This fireside discussion with an international panel of human resources specialists and vets involved in managing practices/clinics will address not only how practices can improve their attractiveness and recruit adequately, but most importantly, how to engage and retain new recruits.

Charlotte graduated in 2011 from Nantes National veterinary school. She began her professional life working as an equine vet in a five-star stable for 3 years. In 2014 she created her own clinic, and get specialized in equine reproduction and embryo transfer (chef de centre de reproduction, IFCE). One year later, the clinic merged with an other equine clinic, and she became a partner of the new compagny. 

She became co director of Réseau Pegas in 2021, and has been recently elected member of the administration commitee of the AVEF.  

Charlotte is also a horse breeder and practises show jumping. 

Mats is the animal hospital Director/areamanager Stockholm since 2017 for IVC Evidensia.

Director for Södra Djursjukhuset in Sweden with almost 300 people working there and over almost 100 veterinarians. Its one of IVC Evidensias largest animal hospitals.

He has worked with leadership for over 20 years in different companys.

Richard Stephenson is responsible for the day to day management of the Equine Practice where he has worked for 31 years. He is a RCVS recognised advanced practitioner in equine practice. He holds the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Certificate in Veterinary Radiology, and is particularly interested in ultrasound and diagnostic imaging. He is qualified to operate the practice’s Hallmarq MRI system. He has also been awarded the R.C.V.S. Certificate in Equine Practice, the fourth veterinary surgeon to obtain this award whilst working at Pool House. Richard is a veterinary examiner for the Worshipful Company of Farriers, chairman of the WCF examinations Board and a Liveryman of the Farriers Company.

He has served as RCVS chief examiner for the certificate in Equine Practice. Richard has recently completed an eight year term of office on the Council of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. He has published extensively on equine matters both in the veterinary press and in popular magazines such as the ‘Horse and Hound’. In addition to these duties he is veterinary surgeon to two of the Midland’s leading racecourses – Uttoxeter and Wolverhampton. In July 2018 he hosted the visit of His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales to our new Equine Clinic.

Thomas graduated at the University of Basel/Switzerland in Economics and Management with focus on Human Resources and Organizational Development in 1999. After an internship in Johannesburg/South Africa at the Chamber of Commerce, he joined the Pharmaceutical company Novartis at their Headquarter in Basel. He held a number of local and international roles with increasing responsibility as HR Generalist and also was appointed Head of Compensation and Benefits for Switzerland. After 10 years in the human pharma business he moved to Novartis Animal Health where he was HR partner for South Europe, North Europe, CEE and Africa. In 2015 Novartis Animal Health was aquired by Eli Lilly and integrated with their Animal Health business Elanco. Thomas became HR Director for Elanco DACH and lead the HR integration of the 2 companies which later was complemented by the acquisition of the Bayer Animal Health Business.

In 2021 Thomas moved from Elanco to VetTrust Switzerland as CHRO. With more than 40 practices and clinics and around 350 employees, VetTrust is the largest Animal Health group in Switzerland.
In addition, Thomas volunteers as Job Coach and Mentor in the Basel area for unemployed job seekers aged 50+ (Tandem 50+).
