CONTENT DESCRIPTION

Join our world-renowned international panel consisting of two highly experienced veterinary imaging specialists and a seasoned emergency & critical care specialist with extensive experience with point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), who will discuss the use of radiology versus ultrasound in dogs and cats with acute abdomen.  In the context of interactive and relaxed case-discussions the group will, amongst many others, be discussing the following questions:

  • First imaging steps in animals presenting with acute abdomen: Rx vs. US
  • Which imaging modality generates the greatest diagnostic yield in the hands of a non-specialist imager?
  • What are minimal requirements for abdominal radiography?
  • Are contrast radiographic GI studies still indicated in today’s veterinary praxis environment?
  • How do I know when to fast, fluid, repeat rads in a patient with GI issues
  • Imaging challenges in the following clinical scenarios:
    • Acute abdomen with icterus
    • Gastroenteritis vs. Pancreatitis
    • Pyometra
    • Abdominal distension etc.

Dr. Fischetti is the Department Head of Radiology and Radiation Safety Officer at Animal Medical Center (AMC). He received his undergraduate and veterinary degrees from Cornell University (1997, 2001), internship training at the University of Pennsylvania (2001-2002), and Residency/Master’s Degree from Ohio State University (2002-2015). He is an executive council member of the American College of Veterinary Radiology (ACVR) and Webmaster of the ACVR.com website. He is the resident director for the AMC’s Diagnostic Imaging Residency, Adjunct Professor of Radiology at Western University Veterinary College, and overseas teaching of over 50 interns, residents and students each year at AMC. Dr. Fischetti speaks nationally and internationally on a variety of topics related to veterinary radiology.

Laura graduated from Cambridge University in 2011 and worked in small animal practice prior to completing a rotating internship at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC). She finished her Emergency and Critical Care residency at the RVC in June 2019 and is now a  diplomate of both the American and European Colleges of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. After a short period of locum work in private practice she has re-joined the RVC and works there as a lecturer in emergency and critical care in January 2020. She has a particular interest in the use of point-of-care ultrasound in emergency and critical care and acute kidney injury.

Dr. Schwarz studied veterinary medicine at the Humboldt and Free University of Berlin in Germany.

He did a diagnostic imaging residency at Glasgow University Veterinary School and became a Diplomate in Diagnostic Imaging with the RCVS (DVR), ECVDI and ACVR. He has been an academic radiologist at the Universities of Pennsylvania and Wisconsin-Madison and is the head of the Diagnostic Imaging Service at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies since 2009.

In 2017, he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (FRCVS) in the UK. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and his particular interests are in thoracic imaging and computed tomography. On both topics he has published a comprehensive textbook.
