PANEL DISCUSSION DESCRIPTION

Oncological emergencies in dogs and cats are relatively common yet decision making can be highly challenging. A multidisciplinary panel of internationally renowned specialists consisting of a surgeon and two medical oncologists (USA & UK) will discuss the best approaches to a variety of oncology emergencies and how to get the best outcomes for your patients. The discussion will focus on the immediate diagnostic and therapeutic steps for these complicated patients and will include management of common emergency presentations of tumors and acute chemotherapy complications.

Attending veterinarians will have plenty of opportunity to ask questions and share their own experiences with the group.

Aaron Harper joined Wear Referrals in April 2021 to head up their all-new specialist oncology department.

Aaron joined from fellow Linnaeus practice Southfields Veterinary Specialists, which he joined back in May 2018. During his tenure, Aaron established the oncology residency program before becoming the Head of Medical Oncology in 2020 at the facility.

Aaron began his career in general practice in North West England back in 2008 after graduating from the University of Cambridge.

In 2016, he completed a residency in small animal oncology at the University of Liverpool and during that time he completed the Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (Small Animal Medicine). Aaron achieved the European Diploma in Veterinary Internal Medicine (Oncology) in 2017 and became a European and RCVS recognised Specialist in Oncology.

Aaron’s main areas of interest are in haematological cancers and the medical management of these conditions. He is also interested in novel therapies for dogs and cats with cancer, along with the management of side-effects in these cases and his research to date has been on this subject.

Aaron is particularly passionate about treating feline lymphoma and has spoken extensively on a variety of medical oncology topics at local and national CPD events. He currently sits on the BSAVA Congress Programme Committee and the ECVIM Oncology Exam Committee.

Outside of work, Aaron’s spare time is taken up entertaining his two cats, Rou and Mischief and his mini-Dachshund, Penfold.
