PANEL DISCUSSION DESCRIPTION

Displacement of the soft palate during exercise is a single consequence arising from multiple possible paths. An international panel of world-renowned equine surgeons with extensive experience with equine upper respiratory tract disorders will discuss both the data and their personal experiences in managing this very “dynamic” condition.

Amongst the many points that will be debated, are the questions if surgery is the gold standard treatment or if different management options should be considered depending on the etiology?

Join this exciting Panel Discussion and interact with the world’s leading experts in the field of upper respiratory tract surgery.

Dr. Parente received his veterinary degree from Cornell University, and then completed an internship at Rood and Riddle Equine and his surgical residency at New Bolton Center, where he is currently a Professor of Surgery. He received his board certification from the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1994 and has served the college in many capacities including the Board of Regents from 2012-2015. He is internationally recognized as a respiratory surgeon and is well published in both texts and journals.

Fabrice was graduated in 1994 from National Veterinary School of Toulouse (South of France).  He Joined the equine clinic of Grosbois near Paris just after, and became partner in 1998. He became an ECVS diplomate in 2010. Fabrice is a senior surgeon at the Equine clinic of Grosbois and Clinic of Chantllly, which are part of the Altano group. He has a 100% activity in surgery and has a major interest in upper airway surgery and fracture repair. He is involved in several research projects in larynx physiology and biomechanics and laryngeal reinnervation. He is also a member of the AOVET Large Animal Expert Group and Faculty since 2016 and is active in the development of new orthopedic implants. When is not working, Fabrice likes also race horses, travelling and skiing.

Dr. Ducharme has been practicing large animal surgery since 1979.  He received his DVM from the University of Montreal and then completed an internship and residency in Large Animal Surgery at Cornell.  He also received a master’s degree in Large Animal Surgery from the University of Guelph.  He has hospital privileges as Professor of Surgery at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and is a board certified Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons.

He is one of the doctors giving specialty care for horses at Cornell Ruffian Equine Specialists at Belmont Park.

Dr. Ducharme’s research/clinical interests are sports medicine with an emphasis on equine upper respiratory airway physiology at exercise including flow and pressure mechanics, neuromuscular assessment of the neural control of airway patency, characterization of health status and disease (respiratory), and their surgical treatments.

Dr. Ducharme has published approximately 150 airway-related manuscripts he and his collaborators (including two current graduate students) have co-trained 3 post docs, 10 PhDs, 8 Masters Degree students, and 32 surgery residents as well as mentored many pre-DVM and DVM students.

Tim qualified from the University of Edinburgh in 2005. After a period in general practice, he joined Rossdales in early 2007, working as an orthopaedic assistant in the Diagnostic Centre. He then went on to complete an 18-month internship at the Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, before embarking on a surgical residency at the University of Edinburgh, co-supervised by Rossdales. Tim re-joined the practice in 2014, and prior to working full time in the hospital team he spent time worked in our Hertfordshire practice and then as part of our Newmarket horses in training team.

In 2013 Tim was awarded an MSc with Distinction from the University of Edinburgh for his work on post-operative finding in horses undergoing laryngoplasty (tie-back) for recurrent laryngeal neuropathy (laryngeal hemiplegia). In 2015 he attained the RCVS Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice and became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (EVCS). He was awarded RCVS Specialist status in 2016 and joined the partnership at Rossdales in April 2017. Tim became a Diplomate of the European Veterinary Dental College (EVDC) in 2018.

Tim works within the hospital surgical team where, as well as emergency admissions, he sees many elective surgical cases. Tim has a particular interest in soft tissue surgery, and sees many of the referred upper airway cases and oversees the practices overground endoscopy service. He has presented and published a number of award winning research studies in the fields of upper airway surgery and diagnostics, and is currently involved in a number of multi-centre research projects in this field.

During his surgical training Tim also developed his skills in equine dental surgery and sees many of the referral dental cases and sinus cases in the hospital. He is able to offer a complete specialist-level service in dental surgery, and regularly lectures and teaches on dental and sinus courses in the UK, Europe, Scandinavia and the USA.
