PANEL DISCUSSION DESCRIPTION

Equine skin tumors including sarcoids, melanomas and squamous cell carcinomas, are some of the most common reasons horses present to equine practitioners.  Intralesional/local chemotherapy, electro-chemotherapy and intralesional immunotherapy have demonstrated excellent long-term control of these cancer types when used appropriately.  Skin tumors are frequently treated in field situations where the potential for public exposure to chemotherapeutic agents is high. The appropriate use of these agents is imperative, both for tumor resolution and to minimize human exposure. One study estimated that over 50% of riders are women of child-bearing age or younger.  Knowledge of the current recommendations for the use of these agents in the treatment of cutaneous neoplasms will advance the treatment of affected horses and provide protection from inadvertent human exposure.

A panel of internationally renowned, multidisciplinary equine clinicians, with longstanding clinical expertise in the treatment of equine skin cancers, will be debating case selection, treatment preferences, troubleshooting treatment problems, steps necessary to minimize inadvertent exposure to the veterinarian and client, and logical overall decision-making strategies for the treatment of equine skin tumors, regardless of the size, type or situation.

Attending veterinarians and nurses/technicians will be able to ask questions, share their own experience and interact with the panel/moderator.
