PANEL DISCUSSION DESCRIPTION

Join us for what promises to be an exhilarating panel discussion with an international panel of world-leading equine surgeons with extensive experience in equine fracture repair and the complications that may occur. The discussions will include implant failure, implant removal and peri-operative imaging as well as prevention of infection, recommended antimicrobial use and the prognosis when infection occurs. Case discussions will be used to illustrate and discuss above points and to cover other technical errors to avoid. The panelists will furthermore debate the best coaptation and support to optimize healing and ways to ensure safety of the team involved.  They will also share many tips and tricks to produce the best prognosis acknowledging that complications can happen to the best surgeon…

There will be plenty of opportunity for attending vets to ask questions, make comments and share their own experience with the group.

Dr. Ruggles, who specializes in orthopedic surgery and lameness, graduated from The New York State College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University in 1987.  He completed an internship and residency in large animal surgery at New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania.  He remained at New Bolton Center as a Lecturer in Surgery until joining faculty at Ohio State University in 1992.  He joined Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky in March of 1999 and is a partner there. He is active in the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) and AOVET.  Dr. Ruggles is a member of the AAEP “On Call” media program. He has been Co- Chairman of the annual AO Equine Courses on Fracture Repair given in Columbus Ohio since 1996.

Henry O’Neill grew up on a farm in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, and attributes his father for his passion and curiosity in the horse. He went onto graduate as a veterinarian in 2005 from the University College Dublin, followed by a number of years in farm animal practice in Northern Ireland. Henry first came to Donnington Grove as an intern during 2008-2009 and inspired by this experience, got placed in an equine surgical training program at Michigan State University under the tutelage of Dr John Stick. Henry qualified as a Diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2013, and gained a Masters of Science at the same time in equine upper airway research. Henry holds memberships to both the British and American Veterinary Medical Associations. Although Henry conducts all forms of surgery and lameness within the hospital, his particular interests are in equine respiratory, orthopaedic and minimally invasive surgery.

Kyla Ortved, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACVS, ACVSMR, is an assistant professor of large animal surgery at University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center, in Kennett Square. She received her veterinary degree from the University of Guelph in 2006 and completed her large animal surgical residency training at Cornell University in 2010. Following her residency, Kyla went on to obtain a PhD in equine cartilage repair at Cornell. In 2016, she joined the large animal surgery faculty at New Bolton Center, where she focuses on orthopedic surgery and research on gene and cell therapies for improving cartilage repair and preventing osteoarthritis.

Dr. Goodrich is a Professor of Orthopedics in the Department of Clinical Sciences. Her laboratory studies new approaches to bone and joint healing in equine athletes, and employs both gene therapy and stem cell therapy. Ongoing studies include using adeno-associated viral vectors to deliver growth factors and anti-inflammatory molecules important in cartilage and bone healing. Dr. Goodrich has utilized mesenchymal stem cells and platelet rich plasma to improve cartilage repair. Further studies utilizing gene therapy combined with stem cell therapies to improve musculoskeletal repair are currently underway.
