PANEL DISCUSSION DESCRIPTION

In Part 2 of Equine Toxicoses, our panel of multidisciplinary specialists will discuss approaches to the poisoned, critically ill equine patient with special focus on the recent concerns related to hoary alyssum (Berteroa incana) contaminated hay, the phytotoxins of Acer spp. (Maple, Box Elder and Sycamore), what to consider when using macrocytic lactones (avermectins and milbemycin) for parasite control in horses, non-selective and selective NSAID use in horses, and the complex presentation and diagnostic work-up of pyrrolizidine alkaloid exposures (e.g. Senecio spp.). We will include current knowledge about the sources and clinical presentation, the diagnostic work-up, and the effective but often challenging therapeutic measures.

Prior to coming to MSU, Puschner was professor and chair of the Department of Molecular Biosciences in the School of Veterinary Medicine at University of California, Davis. She joined the UC Davis faculty after completing her residency in veterinary toxicology in 1999. She received her doctorate of veterinary medicine and PhD from Tiermedizinische Fakultat, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat Munchen, Germany and completed a postdoctoral fellowship with the University of Michigan School of Medicine. Puschner has a true passion for teaching, research, and working with faculty to promote excellence in veterinary education and the profession.

Gary graduated from US Davis , and went on to undertake internships at Texas A & M University and a residency at UC Davis. Gary is a diplomate ACVIM ACVECC and ACVCP.

He currently holds the position of Professor of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis. He has clinical interests in neonatology alongside research interests in neonatology and critical care, fluid balance, and has contributed to/published in excess of 130 papers.

Karyn Bischoff, DVM, MS, Dipl. ABVT, is a veterinary toxicologist at the New York State Animal Health Diagnostic Center and an associate professor at Cornell University. She graduated with her bachelor's degree in Animal Science from the University of Wisconsin (Platteville campus), and she obtained her DVM from the University of Illinois. She earned her master’s degree at Oklahoma State University while completing a residency in toxicology, and she went on to complete a pathology residency at the University of Florida.

Dr. Lynn Hovda is the Director of Veterinary Medicine with SafetyCall International and Pet Poison Helpline (PPH). She is also an adjunct professor at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine and the Chief Commission Veterinarian for the Minnesota Racing Commission. Dr. Hovda received a BS in Pharmacy from North Dakota State University and a BS in Veterinary Science from the University of Minnesota. She received a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Minnesota and followed this with an internship at the University of Georgia and a three-year internal medicine residency at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dr. Hovda received a Master of Science in Veterinary Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and was awarded board certification by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (DACVIM). She has published scientific articles and book chapters, presented scientific abstracts and invited presentations, participated in numerous educational proceedings for lay groups, and served on many professional committees. Her educational and research interests include plants and plant related toxicities, pharmaceuticals and pharmacokinetics, prevention and treatment of pesticide and farm chemical related exposures, and race track associated injuries. When not working, Dr. Hovda lives in rural Minnesota with her family, six horses, four barn cats, one pampered house cat, three exceptional Welsh Corgis, and a herd of goldfish.
