ONLINE LECTURE SERIES CONTENT

In many owner surveys veterinarians are often cited as a major source of nutritional advice and yet surveys of veterinarians tend to show that they often don’t feel confident enough in advising horse owners on nutritional topics.  For equine clinicians it is critical to be aware of how nutrition can positively or negatively affect the health, welfare, behaviour and performance of the horses in their care. At the same time, it is extremely advantageous having an experienced, up-to-date specialist equine nutritionist (veterinary or non-veterinary) as part of your support network.

This series of interactive online lectures and case-discussions is aimed at practicing equine veterinarians and approaches equine nutrition via typical clinical conditions and presentations faced by equine practitioners on a daily basis.  An international selection of world-renowned equine clinicians will be covering the lectures, with highly experiences specialist equine nutritionist adding their input and making comments during the lectures.  Each interactive lecture will then be followed by case-discussions jointly presented by the clinician and nutritionist.

The following key nutrition-associated topics of clinical relevance will be covered via separate in-depth discussion-based modules:  Obesity, weight loss, skin conditions and respiratory diseases, as well as the use of nutraceuticals. In addition, one module will evaluate the use of haematologic and biochemical analyses in the assessment of the nutritional status of horses.

Attending veterinarians are encouraged to ask questions, share their own experiences and present challenging clinic cases as part of this lecture series.

Additional Panel Discussions available on-demand (optional purchases):

  1. Panel Discussion on Management of Muscle Conditions in Competition Horses
  2. Panel Discussion on Nutritional Management of the Competitive Equine Athlete
  3. Panel Discussion on Pasture Management for the Laminitic Horse
  4. Panel Discussion on Nutritional Management of the Obese Horse/Pony
  5. Panel Discussion on Feeding & Colic - Prevention and Post-Operative Feeding Strategies
  6. Panel Discussion on Usefulness/Limitations of Gastric Ulcer Screening & Mass Prophylaxis in Sports/Race Horses
  7. Panel Discussion on Feeding the Senior Horse

Emmanuelle van Erck graduated in 1996 from the French Veterinary School of Maisons-Alfort. She trained in sports medicine at the University of Liège (Belgium) where she obtained her PhD on respiratory function testing in horses. She developped the equine sports medicine unit and consulted as senior clinician in the CIRALE in Normandy (France). In January 2010, she started her own ambulatory referral practice, the ‘Equine Sports Medicine Practice’, based in Belgium. Her practice offers specialized service in equine internal and sports medicine throughout Europe, following national teams and international riders.
Emmanuelle van Erck authored over 50 peer-reviewed scientific articles and regularly lectures at international conferences. She is a member of the FEI expert committee on prohibited substances and doping.

Gayle graduated from the University of Cambridge and completed a rotating internship and then large animal internal medicine and critical care residency at the Royal Veterinary College in London. She then completed a PhD investigating aortic valve prolapse at the University of Nottingham. After 20 years in academia, she left in February 22 to become Director of veterinary Professional Development for IVC Evidensia. She still undertakes clinical work at Pool House Equine Hospital. She is an American Specialist in Large Animal Internal Medicine, American Specialist in Large Animal Emergency and Critical Care, EBVS Specialist in Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation and is Associate Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging. She is also Editor-In-Chief for the Wiley Journal Veterinary Medicine and Science. The topics that she holds close to her heart which include large animal cardiology, gastroenterology and imaging (particularly ultrasonography).

Nicola qualified from the Royal Veterinary College, London, UK in 1990 and started her career in mixed practice where her passion for equine work began. In 1993 Nicola joined Rossdales Equine Veterinary Surgeons in Newmarket to complete a two year internship and went on to locum at several large equine practices before joining Redwings Horse Sanctuary in 1996.

Redwings Horse Sanctuary is equine charity providing a home to over 1,500 horses, donkeys and mules and focuses on rescue, rehabilitation, rehoming and education.

Nicola is now Head of Veterinary and Care at the charity and works with a large, experienced team of veterinary surgeons and nurses to provide medical and surgical care for equines at the sanctuary. She gained her certificate of Advanced Veterinary Practice in Equine Medicine in 2012 and Equine Surgery Soft Tissue in 2013.

Redwings Horse Sanctuary cares for a significant number of older equines, many of whom require specialist care, management and feeding, which is where Nicola’s interest in geriatric medicine and nutrition began. She has published clinical articles in both peer-reviewed journals and books and regularly lectures at conferences and courses for veterinary surgeons, equine nurses and horse owners.

After qualifying from Cambridge University, Pat completed her Ph.D. at the Animal Health Trust into the Equine Rhabdomyolysis Syndrome. She joined the Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition (now Waltham Petcare Science Institute) in 1995. As Director of Science for Mars Horsecare and head of the WALTHAM™ Equine Studies Group, she is responsible for their equine research conducted in collaboration with experts at institutes and universities globally. This provides the science behind the SPILLERS™, BUCKEYE™ Nutrition, and WINERGY™ brands. She is also a scientific advisor to MARS EQUESTRIAN™.

Pat is a European Specialist in Veterinary Clinical and Comparative Nutrition, an RCVS recognized specialist in veterinary clinical nutrition (equine), and a British Equine Veterinary Association Past-President. She is also a member of several international society and charity boards and holds, or has held, a number of academic posts within various institutions around the world.

Pat lectures internationally on nutrition as it affects the health, welfare, behaviour, and performance of the horse. She is the author or co-author of over 500 scientific papers, abstracts, and book chapters with recent emphasis on obesity, laminitis, and senior horse nutrition. She was the co-editor for the 2021 Veterinary Clinics of North America Equine Practice on Equine Nutrition and co-authored two chapters including one on ‘What would be good for all veterinarians to know about Equine nutrition'.

Since graduating from Nottingham University with an Animal Science Degree, and University College Dublin Vet School, with a Postgraduate Diploma in Equine Science , Ruth has worked in commercial nutrition roles varying from consulting, equine feed manufacture, and currently works for Premier Nutrition, a United Kingdom-based premix provider. As such Ruth has wide experience of diet and feed formulation, and also the factors that impact the quality of the feedstuffs that horses eat. Her interest in performance horse nutrition focuses on helping ensure that performance horse diets supply the nutrients and ingredients required, whilst minimising the risk of undesirable contaminants. Ruth has worked with the British Equestrian Team for several years as part of the team providing advice on feeding and nutrition to the squads.
