Ocular diseases are common in both first opinion and referral equine practice and quickly establishing a precise diagnosis in order to implement an appropriate treatment strategy is of utmost importance, as clinical deterioration can occur very quickly.  Whilst many conditions can be diagnosed using routine examination techniques, advanced imaging techniques such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) can allow more accurate determination of the nature, extent and cause of ocular lesions. First described in the horse in 2014, OCT can obtain highly magnified, high-resolution images of the architecture of the equine cornea, lens, iris, retina and optic nerve which near histopathological level. Although a very newly described technique, OCT is already being used clinically in a select number of referrals institutions and it has shown much promise both clinically and as a teaching tool.
