CONTENT DESCRIPTION

As respiratory function is often significantly affected during general anaesthesia in horses, ventilatory support is often needed, but in turn this may affect cardiovascular function and therefore oxygen delivery to the tissues. This webinar will discuss how the anaesthetist can prevent or treat respiratory depression in horses, which types of mechanical ventilation should be used when, and what the possible consequences are for other physiological functions. These considerations will be discussed in a practical manner, in light of the presenter’s own experiences.

.

Alison graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2007 and initially completed a 12 month equine internship in the South of England. She then worked for almost 9 years in a referral practice in Devon where she carried out first opinion equine work as well as leading the anaesthesia and medicine caseloads. She holds the RCVS Advanced Practitioner certificate in Equine Medicine. Alison was appointed as a lecturer in Equine Anaesthesia in 2017 and is currently studying towards the European Diploma in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia.

After graduating as veterinarian in 2002, Stijn Schauvliege completed a 1 year rotating equine internship and an ECVAA residency at Ghent University. During his residency, he performed research on cardiovascular depression in horses. He became Diplomate of the ECVAA in 2009 and defended his PhD in 2010. Since 2010, he has been the head of the Anaesthesia Service at the Dept. of Surgery and Anaesthesia of Domestic Animals, Ghent University. He has served on the Credentials and Education Committee of the ECVAA during 2 years, is the current Vice President of the ECVAA and has been one of the ECVAA representatives in EBVS during several years.
