CONTENT DESCRIPTION

Let's talk about electrolytes! Whether it's an acutely ill foal, or a very sick adult horse, sometimes it seems like every single electrolyte on your panel is out of range. But each one tells a specific story, and knowing how to read the patterns can help you solve a multitude of diagnoses.

This interactive lecture and the corresponding case-discussions will show you how to assess metabolic acid-base status just by looking at your sodium and chloride (and ignoring your bicarb!), and then come up with a plan of how to fix it.

Meanwhile, the anion gap can give you almost magical insight into unmeasured "poison anions" and can hold the key to many hidden diagnoses and treatment plans.

Finally, the kidney: this organ system can be an early warning system for hypoperfusion or sepsis, but there's a lot buried in that simple creatinine value.

How do you use the chemistry profile to tease out what is really going on? In one hour, we'll get you brushed up on all the most important mechanisms, clinical interpretations, and recent research in a highly clinically focused session.

The interactive lecture will be complemented by matching case-discussions presented and debated by both the speaker and discussant with pro-active participation of the attending veterinarians.

Dr. Ben Buchanan grew up in Navasota, Texas. He went to Texas A&M and graduated from there with his DVM in 2001. Afterwards, he completed two residencies; Large Animal Internal Medicine at University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 2004 and Emergency and Critical Care at University of Pennsylvania in 2005. Ben is one of the very few people in the world to be board certified in Internal Medicine and Emergency Critical Care. Dr. Buchanan has a very unique experience in colic, respiratory disease, cardiac disease, eye conditions and sick foals. He joined BVEH Navasota in 2005, where he works alongside his father, T-Bone. He is also active in community outreach by speaking at meetings and events around the world regarding equine care.

Rose Nolen-Walston, DVM, Dipl. ACVIM, is an assistant professor of large animal internal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine’s (Penn Vet) New Bolton Center, in Kennett Square.

She graduated from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine in 2001, and then completed an internship and residency in large-animal internal medicine at Tufts University, in North Grafton, Massachusetts. She spent a subsequent year at Tufts doing research in adult stem-cell biology in mice. She joined the Penn Vet faculty in 2007, where she won the university’s 2013-2014 Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching.
