Prof. Dr. Anton Fürst is a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS) and the head of the Equine Hospital of the Vetsuisse Faculty, University of Zurich. This department offers an overall high caseload on clinical patients every year. The technical expertise and interests of Dr. Fürst cover all fields of equine surgery, and he has already performed several studies about kicking injuries, first aid and osteochondrosis in horses. Currently, his main research focuses on equine orthopaedics. In particular, he is interested in the treatment of subchondral cystic lesions (SCLs) in horses. Dr. Fürst strives for new treatment strategies to improve the healing of SCLs. Therefore he investigated the etiology and pathogenesis of SCLs and is developing new, biologically active filling materials to be injected in the cystic cavity after debridement. After in vitro characterization and proof of efficacy of new materials, the clinical caseload offers future opportunities for their clinical application.

After graduating from the University of Zürich in 1989, Christoph undertook postgraduate training at Zürich completing an Internship and then a Residency in Large Animal Surgery in the Division of Veterinary Surgery. Appointment to a Senior Lectureship in Large Animal Surgery in 1997 was followed in 2001 by the position of Assistant Professor of Equine surgery. From 2006 to 2009 Christoph held the position of Chair of Equine Surgery at the University of Glasgow Veterinary School, and was based in the Weipers Centre for Equine Welfare. In October 2009 he was appointed as Director of the Equine Clinic of the Freie Universität of Berlin. Christoph has received education in equine acupuncture in both the USA and China, and is a certified member of the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society. In 1997 Christoph became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgery. From 2003 to 2007 he was a member of the exam committee, from 2007 to 2010 he was on the board of ECVS and this year he is president of the organization.

Christoph’s clinical interests are broad and include orthopaedic surgery and diagnostic imaging as well as abdominal surgery and diagnostic and surgical laparoscopy. A particular area of expertise is fracture repair and as a result he teaches (as a member of Faculty) equine fracture repair courses that are organized by AO-Vet. Current research activities include the evaluation of new technologies to improve fracture repair a arthrodesis, including new orthopaedic implants and 3-dimensional, intra-operative imaging. 

Henry joined us at the beginning of 2017 from the Langford Vets at the University of Bristol where he has been a Senior Lecturer in Equine Surgery for the last 14 years. He was also Head of Equine Clinical Services until 2015, where he was responsible for teaching soft tissue surgery and dentistry to veterinary undergraduates.

Henry is an RCVS Specialist in Equine Surgery and Dentistry and his particular interests are upper airway surgery, maxillofacial surgery and dentistry. He has published widely in these fields, and lectured and taught at conferences and courses around the world.

Born and educated in Gloucestershire, Henry’s other interests include playing tennis, cycling, skiing, kitesurfing and occasional field sports.

Jack Easley received a DVM degree from Tuskegee University in 1976. After completing a Large Animal Internship at Oklahoma State University, he served as an Associate Professor of Surgery at Kansas State University from 1978 to 1980 where he completed an Equine Surgical Residency and received a Masters Degree in Surgery. He was an Associate Professor of Surgery at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, 1980-1982.  In 1982, he was certified as a Diplomate for the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Equine) and was recertified in 1992, 2002, and 2012. He most recently has become board certified by the American Veterinary Dental College as an equine dental specialist. 

For over 40 years, Dr. Easley has lectured extensively on and promoted equine veterinary dentistry throughout the world. He has written hundreds of articles for publication in professional as well as lay equine journals, textbooks, and periodicals. He serves on the editorial review boards for Equine Veterinary Education, Equine Veterinary Journal, and the Veterinary Dental Journal. Dr. Easley is the co-editor and major contributor of Equine Dentistry.

Dr. Easley resides in Shelbyville, Kentucky where he owns a private practice emphasizing equine dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, medicine and reproduction. He consults extensively in the areas of dental and maxillofacial surgery and accepts referrals from veterinarians seeking help in these areas.
