CONTENT DESCRIPTION

Intoxications in horses are often cause for emergency veterinary visits. When they present, extensive diagnostic and therapeutic measures are required. Accurate diagnosis is the key to approaching a potential poisoning case, can allow for adequate treatment of the poisoned animal and prevent additional cases. In this discussion, our panel of multidisciplinary specialists will provide an approach to poisoned, critically ill equine patient with special focus on the current knowledge about the effective use of decontamination procedures. Furthermore, exposure to ionophore antibiotics, macrocytic lactones (ivermectin/moxidectin in foals), pyrrolizidine alkaloid-containing plants, cardiac glycoside-containing plants, and selenium will be discussed. Rattlesnake envenomations and clinical management controversies when treating envenomated horses will also be discussed.
