COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course was developed to provide attendees with the theoretical knowledge and the practical skills of ultrasound image acquisition and interpretation of the upper front- and hindlimbs, the poll, neck, withers, back and pelvis. It is suitable for vets from equine or mixed practice who are keen to further develop their equine ultrasound expertise. This course covers the following topics systematically and via highly illustrated lectures:
- How to get the most out of your ultrasound machine
- Ultrasonographic Anatomy & Conditions of the Elbow Joint
- Shoulder Joint & Bicipital Bursa
- Stifle Joint Region
- Hip Joint
- The Poll & Neck (incl. Ultrasound-guided Facet Joint Injections)
- Withers & Back
- Percutaneous Ultrasound of the Pelvis & Sacroiliac Region
- Transrectal Ultrasound of the Pelvis & Sacroiliac Region
The panel of internationally renowned speakers/instructors has a wealth of experience and will share common diagnostic pitfalls, erroneous image interpretations, practical tips and pearls of wisdom open and honestly with the attendees. After lunch, 7 hours of practical sessions in small groups (2 – 4 vets per ultrasound machine) between both afternoons, which will provide the attendees with the opportunity to ask questions and to put their existing and newly acquired knowledge into practice, on both live horses and cadavers. The following anatomical regions will be covered during the practical sessions, supervised by the specialists: Shoulder joint & bicipital bursa, stifle joint region, poll & neck (incl. US-guided facet joint injections), withers & back, percutaneous ultrasound of hip & pelvis and transrectal ultrasound of the lumbosacroiliac region & pelvis.
The course fee includes hot lunches, coffee/tea breaks, a wine & cheese reception, extensive electronic course notes and a certificate of attendance. Attendees can choose to only attend the lectures (= Lectures Only) on this course or can register for the entire course (= Lectures & Practical Sessions). On the evening of the first day all attendees are invited to attend the wine & cheese reception. Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available due to the highly practical nature of this course.

David is a European Specialist in Equine Surgery and his main area of interest is orthopaedic surgery and lameness. David qualified from University College Dublin in 2003, before travelling to New York where he worked for four years. Subsequently returning to Ireland he established his own equine practice, focusing on imaging and treatment of equine athletes. David then completed his equine surgery residency programme at University College Dublin (UCD) before successfully obtaining a professional doctorate in orthopaedic ultrasound techniques. David moved to the UK in 2016 where he worked as a surgeon in Western Counties Equine Hospital and then Bourton Vale Equine Clinic. David now heads the orthopaedic and imaging service in the Philip Leverhulme Equine Hospital, University of Liverpool. His most recent research involves investigating contrast ultrasonography, pelvic CT, and ultrasound-guided sacroiliac and cervical facet injection techniques. He has also published work in the fields of joint surgery and synovial sepsis.
More InfoDr. Wade Tenney completed his veterinary studies at Colorado State University. He then went on to do an equine private practice internship at Littleton Equine Medical Center where he stayed on for an additional two years as an associate veterinarian. He then joined B.W. Furlong and Associates in Oldwick, New Jersey where he practiced as an ambulatory/clinic veterinarian with a strong focus on reproduction and nuclear scintigraphy. In 2005, Dr. Tenney completed a 1 year fellowship in Large Animal Ultrasound with Dr. Mary Beth Whitcomb and Dr. Betsy Vaughan at the University of California, Davis. Following his fellowship, Dr. Tenney joined Steinbeck Country Equine Clinic on California’s beautiful central coast. During this time he worked as a general practitioner with a strong focus on sports medicine and ultrasound. He also provided care to clients at the HITS Thermal Horse Show during the winter months. In April of 2013, Dr. Tenney joined the Large Animal Ultrasound Department at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. At the Hospital for Large Animals, Dr. Tenney works closely with the Sports Medicine, Internal Medicine and General Surgery services, providing diagnostic ultrasound services to horses throughout the Northeast. Dr. Tenney also spends the winter months at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Florida providing ultrasound consultations for performance horses in south Florida.
More InfoHenk graduated from Utrecht University, The Netherlands, in 1988. He spent the six years that followed working in two equine clinics in the north and southwest of The Netherlands. In 1994, Henk joined Lingehoeve Diergeneeskunde equine referral hospital in the heart of the Netherlands as equine veterinarian in the ambulatory practice. Since 2000, he has specialised in orthopaedics including lameness exams, pre-purchase exams and diagnostic imaging (radiology, ultrasound, scintygraphy and contrast CT). Henk gained his ISELP certification in 2008.
