COURSE DESCRIPTION

Ultrasonography has become a crucially important diagnostic imaging modality in Equine Orthopedics and most Equine Practitioners nowadays have access to the necessary equipment.  A growing number of equine orthopedic specialists have furthermore extended the use of ultrasonography creatively to assist with injection techniques and to facilitate minimally invasive surgery.  This 2-day practical course has been developed to provide equine and mixed animal practitioners who have experience with ultrasonography, with the theoretical knowledge and the practical skills of performing ultrasound-guided orthopedic injections and ultrasound-assisted surgical techniques, covering all regions of the musculoskeletal apparatus of the horse.  Whole horses will be used to recreate a scenario as it might be encountered in live horses.  A review of conventional and biologic treatment modalities for orthopedic conditions will round the course up.

In the mornings, the following topics will be covered in highly illustrated lectures and case presentations:

  • How to get the most out of your ultrasound machine
  • Principles of Ultrasound-Guidance
  • Ultrasound-Guided Tendon & Ligament Injection
  • Ultrasound-Guided Joint Injections of the Limbs  (incl. hip & shoulder joints)
  • Ultrasound-Guided Bursal Injections
  • Cervical Facet Joint Injections
  • Ultrasound-Guided Back Injections
  • Lumbosacral & Sacroiliac Injection Techniques
  • Ultrasound-Guided Surgery
  • Conventional Systemic & Intra-Articular Joint Therapies
  • What’s the latest on Regenerative Therapies?

Open and frank discussions are encouraged during the course and the speakers will share their personal experiences with attendees, be it successes or failures.

Between both afternoons, 7 hours of practical sessions will give attendees plenty of opportunity to train the different injection techniques on whole horses and specimens and to get tips and tricks in small groups (2 – 4 attendees per ultrasound machine), under the supervision of the specialists.  Each attendee will rotate through the following practical stations:

  • Tendon & Ligament Injections
  • US-guided Upper Limb Joint Injections
  • US-guided Back Injections – Interspinous & Articular Facet Joint Injection
  • Cervical Facet Joint Injections
  • Lumbosacral & Sacroiliac Injection Techniques
  • US-guided Surgical Techniques

The course fee includes lunches, coffee/tea breaks, extensive electronic course notes and a certificate of attendance. Attendees can choose to only attend the lectures (= Lectures Only) on this course or can register for the entire course (= Lectures & Practical Sessions).  On the evening of the first day all attendees are invited to attend the wine & cheese reception. Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available.

David is a European Specialist in Equine Surgery and his main area of interest is orthopaedic surgery and lameness. David qualified from University College Dublin in 2003, before travelling to New York where he worked for four years. Subsequently returning to Ireland he established his own equine practice, focusing on imaging and treatment of equine athletes. David then completed his equine surgery residency programme at University College Dublin (UCD) before successfully obtaining a professional doctorate in orthopaedic ultrasound techniques. David moved to the UK in 2016 where he worked as a surgeon in Western Counties Equine Hospital and then Bourton Vale Equine Clinic. David now heads the orthopaedic and imaging service in the Philip Leverhulme Equine Hospital, University of Liverpool. His most recent research involves investigating contrast ultrasonography, pelvic CT, and ultrasound-guided sacroiliac and cervical facet injection techniques. He has also published work in the fields of joint surgery and synovial sepsis.

Jennifer Fowlie graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, Canada in 2007. The following year she completed an Internship at Moore Equine Veterinary Centre and then spent 3 years at Michigan State University as a Resident in Equine Surgery. During her time at MSU she completed a Masters of Science, with research focusing on meniscal tears in the equine stifle. She has been working in private practice as a surgeon and lameness expert for the past 5 years. She worked for West Wind Veterinary Hospital in Edmonton, Canada and is now presently working at Moore Equine Veterinary Centre in Calgary, Canada. Dr. Fowlie has published several peer-reviewed veterinary journal articles on the equine meniscus and a novel arthroscopic approach to the coffin joint, and has written chapters on the equine stifle in the Equine Surgery and Current Therapy in Equine Medicine textbooks.

Dr. Wade Tenney completed his veterinary studies at Colorado State University. He then went on to do an equine private practice internship at Littleton Equine Medical Center where he stayed on for an additional two years as an associate veterinarian. He then joined B.W. Furlong and Associates in Oldwick, New Jersey where he practiced as an ambulatory/clinic veterinarian with a strong focus on reproduction and nuclear scintigraphy. In 2005, Dr. Tenney completed a 1 year fellowship in Large Animal Ultrasound with Dr. Mary Beth Whitcomb and Dr. Betsy Vaughan at the University of California, Davis. Following his fellowship, Dr. Tenney joined Steinbeck Country Equine Clinic on California’s beautiful central coast. During this time he worked as a general practitioner with a strong focus on sports medicine and ultrasound. He also provided care to clients at the HITS Thermal Horse Show during the winter months. In April of 2013, Dr. Tenney joined the Large Animal Ultrasound Department at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. At the Hospital for Large Animals, Dr. Tenney works closely with the Sports Medicine, Internal Medicine and General Surgery services, providing diagnostic ultrasound services to horses throughout the Northeast. Dr. Tenney also spends the winter months at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Florida providing ultrasound consultations for performance horses in south Florida.
