COURSE DESCRIPTION
Equine practitioners working with sports horses are under considerable pressure to keep the horses under their care competing at the highest level at all times. Furthermore, evaluating poorly performing competition horses can be a daunting task because the clinical signs caused by different conditions may be very similar, leaving vets wondering where to start their investigation.
The world-renowned speakers will provide a broad overview on the most important topics in sports horse medicine and orthopedics and will cover the following subjects through highly-illustrated and interactive presentations and by sharing many practical tips and tricks with the attendees:
- Latest Developments in Orthopedic Therapies – Polyacrylamide, Pro-stride, Resveratrol, Stem Cell Therapy, PrP, IRAP etc.
- A Novel Perspective on Overground Endoscopy
- Applications for Objective Lameness Evaluation Analysis in Sports Horses
- New Ways of using Hematology & Biochemistry in Sports Horses (provided as recording ≈)
- Lameness Examination – When things get complicated; Reliability/Repeatability of Blocks, Multiple Site/Limb Lameness
- Which Heart Murmurs are relevant in Sports Horses
- Practical Equine Rehabilitation – A review of Available Modalities
- Exercise Testing – Identifying Subclinical Problems in Sports Horses
- Contentious Issues in Sports Horse Pre-Purchase Examination
- Feeding the Competitive Athlete (provided as recording (provided as recording)
In the afternoons, 7 hours of practical sessions will allow attendees to further their practical skills on live horses in small groups (2-4 vets per ultrasound). Each attendee will rotate through the following practical sessions supervised by the specialists:
- Distal Limb Ultrasound – Attendees to choose area to examine
- Flexor Tendons & Suspensory Ligament or
- Digital Flexor Tendon Sheath & Fetlock or
- Pastern
- Objective Lameness Evaluation (Equinosis Q – Lameness Locator) as part of the Lameness Examination
- Upper Respiratory Endoscopy & Overground Case Discussions
- Ultrasound of the Stifle Regionor Palpation & Radiographic Techniques – Neck, Back & Pelvis
- Objective Lameness Evaluation as part of the Pre-Purchase Exam
- Exercise Testing – ECG, Lactate Measurements etc.
The course fee includes lunches, coffee/tea breaks, a wine & cheese reception, extensive electronic course notes and a certificate of attendance. Attendees can choose to only attend the lectures (= Lectures Only) on this course or can register for the entire course (= Lectures & Practical Sessions). Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available due to the highly practical nature of this course.
Mary received her DVM degree from the University of Georgia before completing a residency in large animal internal medicine at the University of Florida. She became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Large Animal) in 1996. Mary completed doctoral work in Physiology at the Medical University of South Carolina with work in endotoxemia and endotoxin tolerance. After this, she completed two years in a cardiology/ultrasound training program in the Sports Medicine section at the University of Pennsylvania New Bolton Center before taking a position as a Lecturer in Equine Medicine at the University of California, Davis for 3 years. Mary returned to New Bolton Center to work in their treadmill facility for 3 years, before working as an associate clinical professor in Large Animal Medicine at the University of Minnesota. Currently, she is a part owner of Equine Sports Medicine Consultants, an ambulatory consulting practice focusing on sports medicine and imaging, cardiology and internal medicine, in southeastern PA. Mary’s clinical interests include cardiology and respiratory disorders and how dysfunction in these systems affects performance, as well as neonatology and critical care. She has published several scientific manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, as well as presented numerous abstracts at national and international meetings, and participated in many imaging wet labs at regional and national meetings.
More InfoMatt grew up with horses in Reno, Nevada. When he was 12, he decided to become an equine veterinarian. He spent 11 summers working as a back-country guide at McGee Creek and Mammoth Lakes Pack Outfits, where he met his wife Tiffany (who is now a hospital technician at Steinbeck Equine). Matt enjoys the balance of time in the field seeing horses where they live, and the challenging lameness and diagnostic imaging cases he sees in the clinic.

Dr. Deborah Sieber, a native of the United Kingdom, graduated from the Royal Veterinary College (London), after having spent 12 years training racehorses at top level. Dr. Sieber has in-depth knowledge and passion for the racing industry, but also owned her own practice in UK, with a work load made up of clients from all aspects of the horse world. In 2015 she spent time working as a veterinarian in Singapore, with a variety of top-level Dressage, Jumping and Polo Ponies. Upon her return to the United States in 2014, Dr. Sieber opened Barnside Veterinary Services in Armonk, NY. Since 2017 Dr. Sieber has also been working as an Independent Contractor at Equinosis LLC, manufacturer of the Equinosis Q with Lameness Locator, an inertial sensor based lameness measurement system for horses, providing demonstrations and training to equine veterinarians around the world. She also supports marketing and training activities through CPD meetings, trade shows and informational webinars.
