COURSE DESCRIPTION

This 1-day course is designed to provide practical hands on experience for practitioners and veterinary nurses who are keen to develop their rabbit skills further.

The lectures are provided as recordings, and it is expected that these are worked through ahead of the wetlabs in order to provide a  solid grounding in common clinical presentations in rabbits such as dental, respiratory and neurological conditions, including details on critical care, analgesia and anaesthesia – all of which are vitally important to get sick rabbits better quicker.

The following topics will be covered in lectures and case presentations recordings:

  • Rabbit nutrition and husbandry
  • Clinical assessment of rabbits
  • Rabbit critical care
  • Rabbit Anaesthesia
  • Approach to rabbit gastrointestinal stasis
  • Rabbit Respiratory disease
  • Rabbit dentistry
  • Rabbit Nervous Disease

The wetlab day consists of a series of practical cadaver sessions including airway management, aural surgery, neutering and dental techniques. These classes present a unique opportunity to develop skills which are otherwise rarely offered.

The 7-hour practical session will give attendees the opportunity to put theory into practice on cadaver specimens (at least 1 per delegate) and to ask questions all under the supervision of the course tutors.

For the veterinarians, the following topics will be covered during the practical sessions:

  • X-Ray Interpretation (Dental X-rays & more)
  • Rabbit dental techniques (incl. nerve blocks & extractions)
  • Rabbit Intubation and Airway Management
  • Rabbit Neutering
  • Rabbit Ear Surgery
  • Orthopaedic Surgery for General Practitioners

For veterinary nurses, the following topics will be covered during the practical sessions:

  • Acquiring X-rays
  • Pain Scoring (Assessment of Pain levels)
  • Rabbit Intubation and Airway Management
  • After Care
  • Preparation & Assisting for Ear Surgery
  • Preparation & Assisting for Orthopaedic Surgery

The course fee includes lunch on site, coffee/tea breaks, extensive course notes and a certificate of attendance. Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available.

Craig qualified in 2007 and has been working in veterinary practice since 1999. Craig started in a small exotic practice, later moving to a large multi-disciplinary referral centre as a theatre nurse, moving to emergency critical care night work and came back to working in exotic practice in 2012. Craig has recently completed the Advanced program in veterinary nursing of zoo and exotic species and aims to start a certificate in anaesthesia this year. In January 2016 he helped to set up and run an exotic department at Rutland House Veterinary Hospital and Referral Centre, in St Helens and has worked solely with non-traditional companion animal caseload. In practice he is a team leader as well as a clinical coach, currently with 3 students. Outside of practice he is an officer within the British Veterinary Nursing Association and currently sits on boards with BVA, RCVS, and ABTC.

Molly graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 1992. After graduation she spent the next 4 years working in small animal and exotic medicine in Canada. These varied experiences included working in multicentre urban practice in Toronto and a small exotics practice in rural Ontario. Her case load included a lot of native wildlife such as raccoons, skunks and red-tailed hawks. After returning to the UK in 1996 she has worked in both London and the North West. Molly gained her Certificate in Zoological Medicine in 2001 and her Diploma in Zoological Medicine (Mammalian) in 2007.   Molly now heads the exciting new specialist exotic pets service at Rutlland House Referral Hospital in St Helens, Merseyside.

Neil qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 1983. He is a Diplomate of the European College of Zoological Medicine, Specialist in Avian Medicine and an FRCVS. Neil was responsible for teaching avian medicine at Bristol Vet School from 2001–2011. He has lectured internationally for many years, has contributed to more than sixty-five peer review papers and to more than thirty-seven books.  Neil has received multiple national and international awards and is a past President of both, The European College of Zoological Medicine and The European Board of Specialisation.

Neil headed up Great Western Exotic Vets (part of the Vets Now group) in Swindon, from 2004 to 2017.  He now consults part-time at a range of national and internal locations.  He is otherwise occupied with voluntary conservation work with critically endangered vultures, lecturing, and managing other consultancy instructions.

Victor qualified from the University of Leon (Spain) in 2009. That same year he came over to work in the UK, he has done two internships (at NKR referrals and the Royal Veterinary College) and has worked in first opinion practice and emergency medicine until he joined Byre Veterinary group as clinical director in 2018. Victor has published in peer reviewed journals and presented his research in national and international congresses (ECVS 2016, BSAVA 2017).

In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and son, he also has a naughty tortie cat.
