COURSE DESCRIPTION
This 1 ½-day practical course is suitable for veterinarians from mixed and equine practice who are keen to develop and update their knowledge and especially their practical skills on medical ultrasound of the following anatomic region: Abdomen – GI & non-GI organs (percutaneously & transrectally), thorax, eye, jugular vein etc.. The use of ultrasound for pleural drainage, for collecting biopsy samples and when working up foals will also be discussed.
The panel of internationally renowned speakers/instructors has a wealth of experience with medical ultrasound and will share common diagnostic pitfalls, erroneous image interpretations, practical tips and pearls of wisdom open and honestly with the attendees.
In the mornings the following topics will be covered in well-illustrated lectures and case presentations:
- Gastrointestinal Ultrasound incl. fast localised exam in horses with colic
- Ultrasound of non-GI Abdominal Organs
- Ultrasound-guided Biopsy Techniques
- Non-Cardiac Thoracic Ultrasound (incl. Pleural Drainage)
- Ocular Ultrasound
- Ultrasound Exam of the Foal
- Miscellaneous Medical Ultrasound – Thrombophlebitis, choke, transrectal ultrasound etc.
Over the two 1 1/2 days, 5 hours of practical sessions will give attendees plenty of opportunity to put theory into practice on live horses and equine specimens and to ask questions in small groups (2 – 4 attendees / ultrasound machine), all under the supervision of specialists. The following practical sessions will be covered during the course:
- Fast localised abdominal ultrasound in horses with colic
- The complete Abdominal Ultrasound Exam & Biopsy Techniques
- Thoracic Ultrasound
- US-guidance Training, Eye & Soft Tissues of Head/Neck
- Optional Individual Abdominal Ultrasound Recap
The course fee includes catered lunch, coffee/tea breaks, extensive electronic course notes and a certificate of attendance. Attendees can choose to only attend the lectures (= Lectures Only) on this course or can register for the entire course (= Lectures & Practical Sessions). Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available due to the highly practical nature of this course.
Kate graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1996. She worked in mixed private practice for two years prior to completing a two year fellowship in Equine Cardiology and Ultrasound under Dr. Virginia Reef at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center. She then worked as a lecturer in the department of Equine Cardiology and Ultrasound at New Bolton Center for an additional year. In 2003, she joined Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine to establish a dedicated large animal ultrasound service there. Kate spent time as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Equine Ultrasound Service at The Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine and then returned to University of Pennsylvania, where she is a Associate Professor of Clinical Large Animal Diagnostic Imaging. She has lectured and taught wet-labs on equine ultrasound extensively at national and international conferences and has contributed to several clinical articles in peer reviewed veterinary journals.
More InfoMary received her DVM degree from the University of Georgia before completing a residency in large animal internal medicine at the University of Florida. She became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Large Animal) in 1996. Mary completed doctoral work in Physiology at the Medical University of South Carolina with work in endotoxemia and endotoxin tolerance. After this, she completed two years in a cardiology/ultrasound training program in the Sports Medicine section at the University of Pennsylvania New Bolton Center before taking a position as a Lecturer in Equine Medicine at the University of California, Davis for 3 years. Mary returned to New Bolton Center to work in their treadmill facility for 3 years, before working as an associate clinical professor in Large Animal Medicine at the University of Minnesota. Currently, she is a part owner of Equine Sports Medicine Consultants, an ambulatory consulting practice focusing on sports medicine and imaging, cardiology and internal medicine, in southeastern PA. Mary’s clinical interests include cardiology and respiratory disorders and how dysfunction in these systems affects performance, as well as neonatology and critical care. She has published several scientific manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, as well as presented numerous abstracts at national and international meetings, and participated in many imaging wet labs at regional and national meetings.
More InfoDr. Gillian Haanen is from the Netherlands and graduated from Utrecht University. Following graduation, she worked as an intern at Sportpaardenkliniek Wolvega in the Netherlands, Moore Equine in Canada, and Purdue University in the United States. She developed a love for all things internal medicine and started a Large Animal Internal Medicine Residency at Purdue University in 2016.
Besides horses, she has worked with cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and camelids, which she enjoyed very much!
Dr. Haanen completed her residency training in 2019. We are happy to announce that she has returned to Moore Equine with a special focus on internal medicine and hospitalized patients. Her interests within the field of internal medicine are neonatology, gastrointestinal, respiratory, and infectious diseases.
In her free time she enjoys the Rocky Mountains, from hiking in the spring time to snowboarding during the winter months.
