PANEL DISCUSSION DESCRIPTION
Long bone fractures are a common challenge in both referral and private practice, often resulting from trauma. These fractures vary widely in severity, from simple greenstick fractures in young, growing puppies to complex comminuted fractures requiring advanced stabilization.
Veterinarians must rapidly assess these cases, determine the most appropriate stabilization method, choose the right surgical techniques, and recognize when referral may be the best option. Making these critical decisions efficiently is an essential skill for any practitioner.
Join an esteemed international panel of experts from multiple disciplines as they discuss the decision-making process behind fracture management. This engaging and interactive discussion will cover assessment strategies, surgical approaches, and key considerations for specific repair techniques. Audience participation is encouraged—bring your questions and gain valuable insights from leaders in the field.
Chiara graduated cum laude at the University of Perugia, Italy. In 2009 she started a Residency in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia at the Teaching Hospital of the University of Berne, Switzerland, where she continued working as Clinical Lecturer after she became a Diplomate of both the American and European Colleges of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia, in 2013.
In 2015 she was appointed as Senior Lecturer at the Royal Veterinary College (University of London), and since 2021 she works at the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Cambridge (current role: Associate Professor in Veterinary Anaesthesia).
Chiara has authored more than 70 scientific articles in peer-reviewed veterinary journals and is regularly invited as speaker on Small Animal Anaesthesia at national and international courses/conferences. Her research focuses on anaesthesia and analgesia of non-conventional animal species and management of both acute and chronic pain in companion animals.
More InfoSteve Butterworth graduated from Cambridge Vet school in 1986. Before establishing Weighbridge Referral Centre Steve worked as a house surgeon, in general practice and then as a lecturer in surgery at Bristol Vet School for six years.
During this time he gained Royal College Certificates in Veterinary Radiology & Small Animal Orthopaedics. He then went on to gain the RCVS diploma in Small Animal Orthopaedics in 1992 (one of the first six to do so by examination). This taken together with publication of several peer-reviewed scientific papers and innumerable presentations at veterinary conferences, allowed him to become an RCVS Recognised Specialist in Small Animal Surgery (Orthopaedics) in 1995. He has retained this Specialist status ever since and is currently one of only 43 (taken from the RCVS Register, October 2023) to hold this recognised status in the whole of the United Kingdom. In 2019, Steve was elected to the Fellowship of the RCVS for meritorious contribution to clinical practice.
Steve has served on BSAVA Committees, as Chair of the BVOA and as an examiner for the RCVS, Bristol University & for BSAVA. Over more than 30 years he has gained extensive experience in orthopaedic and spinal surgery and has become an internationally recognised speaker in the field.
Outside of work and family (with 4 grown-up children) Steve spends a lot of hillwalking, some time as a volunteer with the Scout Association and also enjoys running/keep fit and trying to play golf.
Dr Freire obtained her veterinary degree at the Complutense University of Madrid. She then pursued further training in veterinary surgery through a general internship at Ohio State University (2006) and a small animal surgery residency at North Carolina State University (2011). She completed a Research Fellowship in feline ostearthritis (2008) and she earned her PhD, presenting a dissertation on Feline Degenerative Joint Disease in 2014. She is a Faculty Member of the AO Vet North America (AONA Vet) participating in continuing education of Principles of Fractures fixation courses.
Dr. Roe completed his veterinary degree at the University of Queensland in 1979. He did his residency at the University of Illinois and became an ACVS Diplomate in 1992. He completed his PhD at the University of New South Wales in 1991. He joined the surgery faculty at NCSU in 1991. He was promoted to Professor in 2006. He retired in December of 2022. He continues to support the clinical program through attendance at resident rounds, mentoring junior orthopedic faculty, and participating in complex surgical procedures. He continues to support the DVM program through lectures in both 2nd and 3rd years. Dr. Roe’s research interests are in biomechanics of tissues and implants. He provides mentorship for junior faculty research projects and advises on protocol development for a number of external projects. He is the Chair of the Fellowship Organizing Committee for the ACVS Joint Replacement Surgery fellowship. He participates in AO North America continuing education courses, including chairing a course on surgical approaches to long bones and the pelvis.
