COURSE DESCRIPTION

This practical course was designed to provide veterinarians from mixed or equine practice with the theoretical and especially the practical skills to competently examine every joint and tendon sheath of the equine front- and hindlimb ultrasonographically.  A panel of international experts who have dedicated a significant proportion of their careers to musculoskeletal ultrasonography are involved with this course.  The first day will focus on ultrasonography of the frontlimb and on the second day the hindlimb will be covered. The following highly illustrated lectures will be held in the mornings:

  • How to get the most out of your ultrasound machine
  • Ultrasonographic anatomy and conditions of the Foot & Pastern
  • Fetlock & Digital Flexor Tendon Sheath
  • Carpus & Carpal Sheath
  • Elbow & Shoulder Joint
  • Tarsus, Tarsal Bursae & Sheath
  • Stifle Joint
  • Hip Joint & Pelvis

Between both afternoons7 hours of small group sessions (2 – 4 attendees / ultrasound machine) will give attendees plenty of opportunity to put theory into practice on live horses under the supervision of the specialists.  There will furthermore be plenty of time for discussions and each attendee will rotate through the following practical stations:

  • Coffin, Pastern & Fetlock Joints
  • Digital Flexor Tendon Sheath
  • Carpus & Carpal Sheath
  • Elbow & Shoulder Joints
  • Tarsus, Tarsal Bursae & Sheath
  • Stifle Joint

The course fee includes lunches, coffee/tea breaks, a wine & cheese reception, extensive course notes and a certificate of attendance. Attendees can choose to only attend the lectures (= Lectures Only) on this course or can register for the entire course (= Lectures & Practical Sessions).  On Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available due to the highly practical nature of this course.

Dr. Suzanne Brenner graduated from the veterinary school of University of California at Davis in 2003.  Following 3 years of general equine practice, she returned to UC Davis as the 2006-2007 Large Animal Ultrasound Fellow. In late 2007, Dr. Brenner established an exclusively equine ultrasound consultation practice in Northern California providing examinations in both ambulatory and hospital settings including Pioneer Equine Hospital. Additionally, in 2008 she became an adjunct professor for the Modesto Junior College within the veterinary technician program.  Dr. Brenner has instructed in several ultrasound-focused CE courses such as AAEP 360 ultrasound course held in 2012 and 2013. Similar to her professional life, her non-profession interests lie in all things horse related, including attempts at returning to horse trial competitions on any one of her rescued horses.

Dr. Carol Gillis is a graduate of UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. She developed a sport horse practice and became one of the first equine veterinarians to perform ultrasound examinations on the musculoskeletal system of horses.  Dr. Gillis returned for an equine surgery residency at UC Davis. Following completion of the residency, she obtained a PhD in equine tendon and ligament pathophysiology. Concurrently she established the equine ultrasound service at UC Davis, pioneering ultrasound of the musculoskeletal system at the University, and creating courses and hands-on labs to train veterinary students, residents and veterinarians how to perform and interpret ultrasonographic examinations. Clinically, Dr. Gillis has performed more than 26,000 ultrasound examinations of the horse and guided treatment of problems identified.

Dr. Gillis is the author of numerous scientific publications in journals such as the American Journal of Veterinary Research and the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association on the subject of equine soft tissue injury diagnosis and treatment, and recently was an author of “Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery 2014", the definitive reference book on the topic. Dr Gillis has presented her research on Equine Sports Medicine topics nationally at the American Association of Equine Practitioners and the American College of Veterinary Surgery meetings and internationally in the United Kingdom, France, Japan, Dubai, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. Dr. Gillis is a charter member of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. She currently has a consulting practice in Ultrasound and Sports Medicine in Aiken, SC, and lectures nationally and internationally.

Dr. Wade Tenney completed his veterinary studies at Colorado State University. He then went on to do an equine private practice internship at Littleton Equine Medical Center where he stayed on for an additional two years as an associate veterinarian. He then joined B.W. Furlong and Associates in Oldwick, New Jersey where he practiced as an ambulatory/clinic veterinarian with a strong focus on reproduction and nuclear scintigraphy. In 2005, Dr. Tenney completed a 1 year fellowship in Large Animal Ultrasound with Dr. Mary Beth Whitcomb and Dr. Betsy Vaughan at the University of California, Davis. Following his fellowship, Dr. Tenney joined Steinbeck Country Equine Clinic on California’s beautiful central coast. During this time he worked as a general practitioner with a strong focus on sports medicine and ultrasound. He also provided care to clients at the HITS Thermal Horse Show during the winter months. In April of 2013, Dr. Tenney joined the Large Animal Ultrasound Department at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. At the Hospital for Large Animals, Dr. Tenney works closely with the Sports Medicine, Internal Medicine and General Surgery services, providing diagnostic ultrasound services to horses throughout the Northeast. Dr. Tenney also spends the winter months at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Florida providing ultrasound consultations for performance horses in south Florida.
