COURSE DESCRIPTION

This practical course was designed to provide veterinarians from mixed or equine practice with the theoretical and especially the practical skills to competently examine every joint and tendon sheath of the equine front- and hindlimb ultrasonographically.  A panel of international experts who have dedicated a significant proportion of their careers to musculoskeletal ultrasonography are involved with this course.  The first day will focus on ultrasonography of the frontlimb and on the second day the hindlimb will be covered.

The following highly illustrated lectures (in English, no translation but with German moderation) will be held in the mornings:

  • How to get the most out of your ultrasound machine
  • Ultrasonographic anatomy and conditions of the Foot & Pastern
  • Fetlock & Digital Flexor Tendon Sheath
  • Carpus & Carpal Sheath
  • Elbow & Shoulder Joint
  • Tarsus, Tarsal Bursae & Sheath
  • Stifle Joint
  • Hip Joint & Pelvis

Between both afternoons, 7 hours of small group sessions (2 – 4 attendees / ultrasound machine) will give attendees plenty of opportunity to put theory into practice on live horses under the supervision of the specialists.  There will furthermore be plenty of time for discussions and each attendee will rotate through the following practical stations:

  • Coffin, Pastern & Fetlock Joints
  • Digital Flexor Tendon Sheath
  • Carpus & Carpal Sheath
  • Elbow & Shoulder Joints
  • Tarsus, Tarsal Bursae & Sheath
  • Stifle Joint

The course fee includes lunches at a restaurant, coffee/tea breaks, a wine & cheese reception, extensive course notes and a certificate of attendance. Attendees can choose to only attend the lectures (= Lectures Only) on this course or can register for the entire course (= Lectures & Practical Sessions).  On Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available due to the highly practical nature of this course.

This course is suitable for RCVS Modules:  B-EP.3;  C-E.6;  C-E.7;  C-E.15;  C-EP.17

Until May 2018, she was working as a senior clinician at Rossdales Diagnostic Centre seeing referral cases from a wide variety of disciplines. Carolin is now heading up the orthopaedics department at the Tierklinik Hochmoor in Gescher-Hochmoor, Germany. In 2025, Carolin became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Sporets Medicine & Rehabilitation. Carolin has been invited to speak at a number of national and international meetings. Following his residency, he undertook a 3 year research project culminating in the award of a PhD for his studies on the extracellular matrix of equine tendon, a field in which he still focusses both clinically and through research. He remained at the RVC, first as a Lecturer in Equine Surgery, then as Senior Lecturer in Equine Surgery before his appointment as Professor in Equine Orthopaedics in December 2003. He holds the Diploma of Equine Orthopaedics from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and is a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Specialist in Equine Surgery.
