CONTENT DESCRIPTION
The advent of new cone beam techniques and adaptation of fan beam machines allow image acquisition in a standing position, making CT an excellent tool for diagnosing foot pain. Furthermore, short acquisition times make CT ideal for surgical planning and further evaluation of hoof wall pathology such as space occupying lesions e.g. keratoma.
The high spatial resolution of CT allows in-depth evaluation of bone pathology and is especially useful for the evaluation of subchondral bone resorption and periarticular pathology in the distal interphalangeal joint. The addition of intra-articular contrast helps further in the assessment of the articular cartilage, which is difficult to evaluate with other imaging modalities.
Fan beam CT can be used for comprehensive evaluation of soft tissue pathology in the foot, especially if intra-arterial or intravenous contrast is used. This is particularly useful for assessing deep digital flexor tendon lesions in the foot, where contrast enhancement helps determine not only the presence and location of a lesion but also allows staging.
The quick acquisition time make CT ideal for surgical planning not only for fracture repair but also for further evaluation of hoof wall pathology such as keratomas.
Navicular bursa contrast – irregular dorsal margin of the deep digital flexor tendon
Core lesion extending to the dorsal border in the presesamoidean region
Foot penetration - Lysis flexor cortex of the navicular bone, septic navicular bursa
Cone beam CT – unusual osseous cyst-like lesion palmar aspect of the distal phalanx.
Marianna qualified at the University of Parma in 2004 and she was awarded a PhD in diagnostic imaging in 2010. She trained as a large animal radiologist at the Animal Health Trust and became board specialist in 2015. She has since worked as Lecturer at the Royal Veterinary college and currently divides her time between the Equine radiology team at VetCT and a clinical imaging role at a referral hospital in the UK.
Philip earned his veterinary degree at the University of Minnesota in 2012 and then continued his education as a Diplomate in Surgery.
In May 2018, he graduated and became an American specialist in equine surgery - Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons - Large Animal.
Philip grew up in Minnesota where he has competed in both hunter classes and polo.
Phil started working with Evidensia in the fall of 2018 and you will find him in surgery, CT and as a surgeon on call.
