Part of the Equine Computed Tomography (CT) Image Interpretation & Clinical Applications Online Lecture Series

CONTENT DESCRIPTION

This module provides a comprehensive overview of the use of computed tomography (CT) to evaluate the shoulder and elbow joints in horses. CT of the elbow and shoulder became recently available for adult horses with the increasing availability and use of large bore fan beam CT scanners in equine imaging.

Detailed 3D imaging of the bone and surrounding soft tissues allows for in-depth evaluation of the elbow and shoulder in horses with lameness localized to (one of) these joints. The articular cartilage can be visualized after injection of intra-articular iodinated contrast medium, providing a more complete evaluation of the joint. CT is also helpful for surgical planning and/or CT-guided surgery in cases with osseous cyst-like lesions and/or (complex) fractures.

Key components of the module include a review of the relevant anatomy, the principles of CT interpretation and acquisition, best practices for obtaining high quality images and normal imaging characteristics. Common pathologies will be discussed including case-based discussions to enhance diagnostic skills and correlation.

Fig. 1 (lateral to the left): A. Transverse image of the cubital joint with a linear subchondral bone defect in the medial condyle of the medial humeral condyle. B. Frontal plane image of the cubital joint with a large subchondral osseous cyst-like lesion surrounded by marked sclerosis in the proximomedial part of radius. Presence of gas within the joint space consistent with vacuum phenomenon. C. Transverse plane image of avulsion fracture of the ulnaris lateralis muscle from the lateral epicondyle of the humerus..

Dr. Nelson is an assistant professor of equine surgery at the Johnson Family Equine Hospital and Veterinary Teaching Hospital in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University. He is a principal investigator within the Orthopaedic Research Center and Preclinical Surgical Research Laboratory, where he uses his equine surgical knowledge of detecting and treating orthopedic injury to advance and improve outcomes in horses, while also contributing translational knowledge towards humans in the concept of One Health. Dr. Nelson's research interests are focused on developing and improving imaging and surgical techniques, with particular focus on articular cartilage repair and osteoarthritis.

Marieke Zimmerman graduated as a veterinarian from the University of Ghent in 2008. After internships in France and the United Kingdom, she started working for Marc Suls in 2010. Here the focus was on orthopedics and medical imaging. After further specializing in medical imaging during externships at UC Davis, Washington State University, Colorado State University and the University of Lyon, Marieke became head of medical imaging at Equitom in Belgium in 2014. In 2018, Marieke started a 4-year residency in Lyon, after which a dream came true in 2022: Marieke obtained the title of Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging. Since then, she has been head of medical imaging at Via Nova.

Marieke spends her free time with her family, she also enjoys eating out and traveling.
