CONTENT DESCRIPTION
Showjumpers are subject to unique athletic demands that can test the limits of their physical ability. This first discussion in the Discipline-Specific Performance Challenges Series brings together leading veterinarians and world-class physiotherapists to explore how to identify, manage and prevent injuries in these elite athletes. The panel will discuss the performance-limiting factors and challenges they regularly encounter at different levels of the sport and openly debate the similarities and differences in their approach to management and views. From amateur-produced horses to seasoned professionals, join the discussion on how to optimise soundness, enhance performance, and set realistic expectations for showjumpers at all levels.
Dr. Ugo Carrozzo graduated as a veterinarian with honors in 1998 at the university of Bologna in Italy.
After his studies he completed an internship in France at the Desbrosse Equine Clinic. Based on his special interest in orthopedics and sports medicine, Ugo founded his own practice. He had always a focus on scientific based quality medicine and his main strength is to perform thorough orthopedic clinical examinations and find the original pathological source.
In 2008, he founded ‘Clinica San Biagio’, an equine hospital in Italy, near Bologna. Besides the general clinical services provided (surgery, orthopedics, internal medicine, etc.) he also invested in a standing MRI scan, making Clinica San Biagio the first equine hospital in Italy with a standing MRI.
Ugo became an official FEI vet in 2012 and one year later he became ISELP certified. Since then, he was asked to become an instructor on several ISELP courses and delivered lectures at orthopedic conferences as a guest speaker.
In 2018, he obtained the Diploma de Kinesiology, Physiotherapy and Veterinary Rehabilitation from the National Veterinary School of Alfort in France.
As a renowned sport veterinarian, he participated at 5 European Championships, 3 World Championships and 2 Olympic Games. Ugo was the official team veterinarian for Japan at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Since 2017, Ugo is also the official team veterinarian for the Italian jumping team.
Currently, he is also responsible for the orthopedics and sports medicine cases at Paul Schockemöhle stable in Germany.
John has been in equine veterinary practice for over 40 years and has wide experience of the competition horse. He was the Team Vet to the British Showjumping team for 21 years from 1978, and to the British Dressage Team since 1983; London 2012 was his eighth Olympic Games.
John has been an FEI vet since the early 1980s and is currently Chairman of the FEI Veterinary Committee along with holding the position of 1st Vice President of the FEI from 2010 until 2014. He is a past Chairman of the International Treating Veterinarians Association, and was Information Officer and Treasurer of the British Equine Veterinary Association. He has several books published on veterinary issues of the horse.
As well as overseeing the Equine Sports Science and Medicine team, he is also the lead vet for the Podium Potential squad.
Dr. Jan-Hein Swagemakers is the team veterinarian to the German showjumping team. Under his care the German team has been the most successful nations cup winning team of the past decade. He is specialized in surgery, chiropractic and orthopedics. Based out of the Oldenburg region in Germany Dr. Swagemakers spends his time between top German showjumping stables and consulting on cases around Europe.
