This course has been designed to equip the equine practitioners with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to make the most of their abilities and ultrasound machine, in the diagnosis and treatment of frequently encountered equine musculoskeletal conditions affecting the front- and hindlimbs, back and sacroiliac region.  This course is suitable for all vets aiming to improve their knowledge and skills in this area, as the practical sessions will be adapted to the attendees’ skill levels.

In order to make the practical training on-location as efficient as possible, all attendees will receive access links to the 8 lecture recordings listed below as soon as they register, so that the lectures can be viewed on-demand whenever suitable and at your leisure before the event.  In order to receive a RACE-accredited certificate for the online lectures, an MCQ quiz will have to be passed.

The on-location workshop will be held on Saturday 7th of December at the Golden Gate Equestrian Center in Orlando.  The 4 instructors will be sharing invaluable tips/tricks and pearls of wisdom with the attendees during the 8 hours of practical sessions in small groups (2 – 4 vets per ultrasound machine) on live horses.  Each attendee will be able to extensively hone his/her practical skills at the following practical stations:

A bus will be leaving the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando at 8.00am transporting the attendees to the Golden Gate Equestrian Center and back after the workshop.

Dr. Suzanne Brenner graduated from the veterinary school of University of California at Davis in 2003.  Following 3 years of general equine practice, she returned to UC Davis as the 2006-2007 Large Animal Ultrasound Fellow. In late 2007, Dr. Brenner established an exclusively equine ultrasound consultation practice in Northern California providing examinations in both ambulatory and hospital settings including Pioneer Equine Hospital. Additionally, in 2008 she became an adjunct professor for the Modesto Junior College within the veterinary technician program.  Dr. Brenner has instructed in several ultrasound-focused CE courses such as AAEP 360 ultrasound course held in 2012 and 2013. Similar to her professional life, her non-profession interests lie in all things horse related, including attempts at returning to horse trial competitions on any one of her rescued horses.

Dr. Gibson is a clinical assistant professor of veterinary radiology at Texas A&M University with research and clinical interest in equine musculoskeletal imaging and comparative imaging in both large and small animal species. Prior to completing radiology residency at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Gibson completed a rotating equine internship with a heavy surgical, sports medicine, and imaging caseload at Oakridge Equine Hospital in Edmond, Oklahoma then went on to complete a large animal ultrasound and cardiology fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, New Bolton Center. She enjoys teaching and looks forward to her new role as faculty at Texas A&M University School of Veterinary Medicine as well as participating as an instructor in imaging-related continuing education courses. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family, listening to live music, and cooking as well as trying new restaurants and cuisines.

Dr. Carol Gillis is a graduate of UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. She developed a sport horse practice and became one of the first equine veterinarians to perform ultrasound examinations on the musculoskeletal system of horses.  Dr. Gillis returned for an equine surgery residency at UC Davis. Following completion of the residency, she obtained a PhD in equine tendon and ligament pathophysiology. Concurrently she established the equine ultrasound service at UC Davis, pioneering ultrasound of the musculoskeletal system at the University, and creating courses and hands-on labs to train veterinary students, residents and veterinarians how to perform and interpret ultrasonographic examinations. Clinically, Dr. Gillis has performed more than 26,000 ultrasound examinations of the horse and guided treatment of problems identified.

Dr. Gillis is the author of numerous scientific publications in journals such as the American Journal of Veterinary Research and the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association on the subject of equine soft tissue injury diagnosis and treatment, and recently was an author of “Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery 2014", the definitive reference book on the topic. Dr Gillis has presented her research on Equine Sports Medicine topics nationally at the American Association of Equine Practitioners and the American College of Veterinary Surgery meetings and internationally in the United Kingdom, France, Japan, Dubai, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. Dr. Gillis is a charter member of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. She currently has a consulting practice in Ultrasound and Sports Medicine in Aiken, SC, and lectures nationally and internationally.

Dr. Wade Tenney completed his veterinary studies at Colorado State University. He then went on to do an equine private practice internship at Littleton Equine Medical Center where he stayed on for an additional two years as an associate veterinarian. He then joined B.W. Furlong and Associates in Oldwick, New Jersey where he practiced as an ambulatory/clinic veterinarian with a strong focus on reproduction and nuclear scintigraphy. In 2005, Dr. Tenney completed a 1 year fellowship in Large Animal Ultrasound with Dr. Mary Beth Whitcomb and Dr. Betsy Vaughan at the University of California, Davis. Following his fellowship, Dr. Tenney joined Steinbeck Country Equine Clinic on California’s beautiful central coast. During this time he worked as a general practitioner with a strong focus on sports medicine and ultrasound. He also provided care to clients at the HITS Thermal Horse Show during the winter months. In April of 2013, Dr. Tenney joined the Large Animal Ultrasound Department at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. At the Hospital for Large Animals, Dr. Tenney works closely with the Sports Medicine, Internal Medicine and General Surgery services, providing diagnostic ultrasound services to horses throughout the Northeast. Dr. Tenney also spends the winter months at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Florida providing ultrasound consultations for performance horses in south Florida.
