Altano Academy Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation Days 2025
The Altano Academy Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Days bring together three dynamic days of learning, discussion, and hands-on training in Kungsbacka, Sweden, from November 11–13, 2025.
This course is open to all Altano veterinarians, regardless of background or level of experience. The program combines focused lectures, practical wetlabs, and live case work-ups led by internationally recognized experts.
On day one, the spotlight is on the regions most frequently examined with ultrasound in the horse: flexor tendons, suspensory ligaments, the foot, stifle, caudal cervical region, and lumbar region. Dr. Erik Bergman will explain how to image these areas and integrate findings into prepurchase examinations. In the afternoon, small-group wetlabs (limited to 5–6 participants per instructor) offer hands-on training in scanning techniques with direct specialist guidance.
Day two centers on the clinical evaluation of the horse. Through interactive lectures enriched with extensive video material, Dr. Christine Svanholm and Dr. Brenda Hoogelander will guide participants in objective gait analysis and gait pattern recognition. The afternoon features in-depth orthopedic examinations of live cases – covering clinical assessment, diagnostic imaging, treatment, and rehabilitation – with two instructors working with every seven participants.
On day three, clinical insights are brought together in case-based sessions on cervical pathologies and rehabilitation, led by Dr. Florian Lackner and Dr. Frans van Toor. Small groups will present and discuss live cases, ensuring knowledge is immediately applied in practice.
Throughout the course, the schedule stays flexible and interactive, adapting to the questions, cases, and needs of participants. Beyond the program, this event is also a chance to connect with colleagues across the Altano Group, exchange experiences, and strengthen professional networks.

Dr. Erik Bergman graduated from the Veterinary Faculty of Ghent, Belgium, in 1996. Directly after graduation, he worked in the Department of Equine Reproduction and Obstetrics in Ghent, Belgium, under the supervision of Prof. A. de Kruif. After working in Australia for a season as a theriogenologist, he moved his work to Lienden, The Netherlands. In 2000, Erik was one of the founding partners of Lingehoeve Diergeneeskunde, a mixed-referring hospital. In 2003, Erik became a Diplomate of the European College of Animal Reproduction (ECAR).
Over the years, his interest switched towards equine orthopedics. He was the founder of equine scintigraphy in the Netherlands and, besides being a clinician, he became responsible for advanced diagnostic imaging. In 2006, he developed a technique to image the equine stifle using Contrast Computed Tomography (CT). In 2008, Erik was one of the first ISELP certified members (The International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology).
In 2010, Dr. Bergman became an associate member of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging (LA-ECVDI). With this title, he teaches imaging residents. Erik was responsible for the diagnostics and orthopedic imaging of sport horses at multiple equine events, such as the World Equestrian Games in Caen in 2014, European Championships in 2015, Olympics: Rio de Janeiro (2016), Tokyo (2021) and Paris (2024).
In 2015, Erik was co-founder of the Sporthorse Medical Diagnostic Centre (SMDC), which is a center of excellence for sport horses where a multidisciplinary team (qualified equine veterinarians (orthopedic-, internal medicine- and dental specialists), physiotherapists, and farriers) examine and treat (sport) horses daily.
Since 2021, Erik is vice-president of the ISELP and is responsible for lecturing different ISELP modules all over the world. In 2022, he was recognized as a Diplomate of the ECVSMR (equine sports medicine and rehabilitation) and completed his MBA program at Erasmus University of Rotterdam.
SMDC joined the Altano group in 2019, and Erik is actively involved in making this group a global veterinary equine corporate.
Izabella graduated in 2014 from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Uppsala. During her studies, she worked as an assistant at the Specialist Equine Hospital in Strömsholm. In 2013, she began working as a veterinarian at Evidensia Equine Hospital Stav, before joining Mälaren Equine Clinic in the spring of 2016. Her main areas of interest include orthopaedics, chiropractic care, ultrasound diagnostics, and poor performance in ridden horses. In December 2020, Izabella became ISELP-certified (International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology), an advanced international certification in equine orthopaedics.
She is currently undertaking a two-year veterinary chiropractic education in the Netherlands through FES (Focus on the Equine Spine). Before pursuing her veterinary career, Izabella competed at the Swedish National Championships in eventing and dressage at the pony level and was a member of the Swedish Junior National Dressage Team. More recently, she has begun competing in gaited classes with Icelandic horses, focusing on four-gait and tölt. Since 2017, Izabella has served as the Swedish national team veterinarian for Icelandic horses.
